EPaws (team-angel-coulby made me do it. Blame her for this.) The wind whips against his face as he rushes along the river. It’s cold and the coat he has is of no use. But he has to keep moving because he has wasted enough time already. One minute too late and he might lose everything. She stands in the wings, the familiar nervous churning of her stomach the only thing keeping her company. It’s a great opportunity for her - the money is good and major record producers are in the audience. Yet it is sadness and loss that dominates. He runs past the park they used to frequent but it barely registers. All he can think of is how he needs to be faster, get there sooner. In his haste, he misses the crack in the pavement and trips, crashing to the ground inelegantly. Despair swamps him when he stands and realises he must have hurt his ankle. But he can’t stop now. He can’t lose her. The applause is thunderous and the spotlight focuses on her. Standing there in the middle of the stage, a sense of peace fills her. This is where she belongs. She reaches for the microphone, her hand gently caressing it like she would have caressed him a long time ago. The band starts up and she lets the music take over. His ankle is throbbing but he is relieved that he made it successfully to the hotel. They refuse him entry until he drops his father’s name - the father who disowned him for “shacking up with a bar singer”. The strains of the song that float through the thick mahogany doors are familiar and he knows all the words. It’s her voice and his heart speeds up. Slowly, gingerly on his tender ankle, he threads through the tables filled with people he once socialised with. The spotlight is blinding but she knows he’s here. She can sense him. The fine hairs on her arm stand and her heart pounds. It takes some effort to continue singing and not shield her eyes to see if he is really here. She’s an angel on stage and he lets himself drown in her velvet voice. His presence does not go unnoticed and Lancelot, host of the party, is soon by his side. For a while they stand side by side, mesmerised by her. She loves you Lancelot says before he takes his leave. He knows. The performance over, she sits in the dressing room waiting. He comes, sheepishly and apologises. He was jealous and foolish and selfish he says. He promises never to interfere in her career again. I did it for the money, not Lancelot she tells him and he nods. For the first time in weeks, they go home together.
