It isn't an alternate reality. W&H performed a spell that changed the worlds memories. It's similiar to Dawn's situation. Even though he wasn't always a member of the Reilly family, he is now. If it was an alternate reality, wouldn't Connor genuinely be the Reilly family's son so he'd have lost his half-vampiric qualities? I thought it was reality alteration myself when I first watched, but the fact that he healed in Origins made me believe it'd been a huge memory altering spell instead.
