Sorry Mulan, my love.
I guess when everyone said everything came easily to Mulan....I couldn't defend that.
Kayley, however started out not so great, and learns to be strong over time. We can see her development a bit better.
Mulan is beautiful and feminine, but she simply doesn't feel comfortable getting dressed up like a porcelain doll because that's just not who or how she is. She just happens to find her way by combining her masculine training in the army with her feminine ingenuity, resources, etc. The movie doesn't say femininity is bad, just not her way; but that doesn't mean it doesn't help her save the day, discover, or embrace who she is.
Kayly's disdain for a new dress, wish to be like her father instead of her mother, determination to be a knight seems to stem from the fallacious thinking that "fighting and swords = empowerment, while dresses and femininity = weak, stupid, anti-feminist, bad role-model, and inferior." Which is, ironically, just as sexist as the claim that girls and women should only like dresses and feminine things.
Not only do they insult non-tomboys by portraying Kayly that way, but then the movie turns her into a useless "faux action girl." That is, both she and the narrative boast of being a tough action girl, but who always has to be saved once the time comes. While she does finally get to do good at the very end, throughout the whole movie Garret gets more butt-kicking and day-saving moments than she does. -_-
by a Disney owned company!
So, because Disney owned distribution rights to
this movie, it is ½ Disney and ½ Warner Bros.
