I wouldn't call them opposites, though...

Far and away. So much so that they are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Belle is my second favorite after getting usurped by Tiana (who could also be described as conservative and outcast), while Ariel was always dead last.

By far, really. Ariel is fourth, and Belle is like 9th or somewhere down there.

But although I prefer Ariel for many reasons, Belle will always be special to me because of a recent event that happened to me, so she'll always be have a special place in my heart.

I prefer Ariel but I simultaneously prefer Belle for those exact reasons. I'm definitely more like her there.

I really disagree with them being opposites. They are both very inquisitive, risky and confident. I don't think any Renessaince DP is a polar opposite of other. I think that the closest to opposites among Renessaince DPs are Jasmine and Mulan( confident, short-tempered, outspoken, resentful, passive, incosistent, willing to abandon and displease her family vs shy, self-hating, pleasing, family-oriented, doormat-like at times, persistent) but they still have something in common( e.g. resourcefulness).
Belle isn't conservative. She has more peaceful relationship with her dad than Ariel but it's more due to Maurice's much more liberal parenting style. I doubt that Belle would get along that well with her parent, if her father were Triton, Powhatan or Fa Zhou. I'd say Belle is even more stubborn and argumentative than some of later DPs, namely Mulan and probably Rapunzel. I doubt that Belle would agree on arranged marriage to please her father or for reputation( she agreed to sacrifice her freedom to save his life, yes, but it's not same). Belle going to the West Wing out of curiousity and breaking her promise by leaving castle after West Wing incident shows that she is very rebellious and disobedient too. She rebelled, even if not against her understanding and liberal dad. Being the daughter of the most liberal and easygoing Renessaince DP dad vs daughter of the strictest and least easygoing Renessaince DP dad doesn't make them opposite.

She has a pleasant personality, and Belle is standoffish to people.
