Anyway, this one and Ariel's. Jasmine is hands down the kindest person in the movie and she's only brash to people who wrong her. Ariel's is just ridiculous because we see plenty of evidence that she had a passion for being human and her father forced her to take drastic measures.
Jasmine's especially though, since I often speak my mind, and I think women are often put down for having opinions. And I will reiterate, Jasmine only is ever angry when people are treating her disrespectfully. In this society, women are discouraged from speaking up verbally so a character like Jasmine is great. I take this one personally since I, too, also have no problem saying something when someone is rude or disrespectful.
The Cinderella and Ariel ones piss me off, as well.
like someone already said here she always wants to be human and if in middle way she fallen in love, what is wrong? if is princess' choice to marry, is her right.
A couple others I've seen that I hate as well:
Cinderella is a doormat who doesn't stand up for herself.
Tiana is mean and hyper-judgmental.
Snow White - There's nothing wrong with caring mostly about romance.
Cinderella - As if she doesn't have amazing heart, patience, and strength. And she was a servant.
Aurora - Dreamy, romantic, sweet, calm, modest. She just has little screen time and not much to do in the plot.
Ariel - Why is Part of Your World one of the most famous Disney songs but people still don't remember she wanted to be human before she met Eric lol.
Belle - She seems to have a fair amount of flaws.
Jasmine - What? Where? She has an attitude but nowhere near a bitch.
Merida - She was foolish and made a mistake and made up for it.
The first four bother me the most.
aslo Ariel's and Cinderella's too
Anyway, I kind of agree with Belle's. Mary Sues can have flaws (isn't that what people hate so much about Bella Swan? She's selfish, passive, and obsessive?) but they won't be portrayed as flaws, which is what makes them Sues. Belle is portrayed as always right, even when something is her fault, as well as everyone loving her while being more special than the other girls, which is pretty Sue ish. But to be fair, most of the DPs are Purity Sues.
Cinderella's hate usually stems from gross, victim blame-y reasons, but the Snow one baffles me the most because she does a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with wanting a man, which there's absolutely nothing wrong with anyhow. Aurora has a personality, it just isn't one everyone likes.
Merida, I half agree with. I think while the movie does present what she did as bad, it's Elinor who is presented more in the wrong in her beliefs and attitude and needs to learn a lesson through being forcibly transformed. BUT I do think she gets a disproportionate amount of hate from fans who otherwise excuse other characters doing similar mistakes.
it's wrong because emotional/psychological resilience is very much a thing - and it's at least as valuable as more overt displays of not taking shit from your oppressors, if not more. it's certainly more useful in the long run.
i think what many people don't understand is that just getting that dress made was an incredible act of defiance - and showing up at the ball, even after her stepfamily savagely humiliated her and tore up the original dress, was an even bigger deal. but no one ever gives cinderella credit for it. going to a ball and falling in love - just believing in love after what she had been through - is pretty hardcore.
I’ve always loved Ariel because she went after her dream! She wanted to be human and explore a whole new world (no pun intended). Rescuing Eric and falling in love with actually pushed her into making her dream a reality. Everyone makes her seem wrong for chasing after her dream, besides, isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?
And why is Cinderella wrong for going out and going to the ball? She had lost everything and was constantly abused by her step family for years. Why is it so bad that for once, she wanted to go out and have fun and I’m the process, met someone and fall in love?
Others too bother me when people dont use it in a context. There's a reason behind DP's actions - their flaws and their failures. Its what makes them human.
