Please try to remove your bias and give concrete reasons for why you choose said princess1 also try to remember none of the princesses are that feminist!
I have chosen Tiana are the next least feminist, because even though it's empowering that she works so hard and gets a successful job, a lot of that kind of dies down when she becomes a frog. The line at the end where she says her dream wouldn't be complete with Naveen especially pisses me off.
While Pocahontas is daring and bold, I don't think she does as much in the feminist department as Tiana, Belle and Mulan. True, she defies tradition, and is unwilling to be the trophy wife of a war hero. And yes, she shows her whole tribe that one woman can bring peace. However, for most of the movie, she seems to be too uncertain in herself and her capabilities. I'm not sure if I am explaining that clearly enough, I feel however that while she brings a good feminist message, it's not as strong as the messages of the other 3 remaining DPs.
-Tiana: "omg I want a restaurant so bad"
-Gives up dream for Naveen "my dream wouldn't be complete without you" --really? It's one thing to say "I wouldn't be completely happy in life without you" its another thing to say her goals of a restaurant wouldn't be complete without Naveen.
-Shows absolutely no remorse or upset that she has lost her restaurant, because 'she has Naveen', regardless of the fact if Charlotte kissed Naveen too late or not.
Again, it's about endgame. Her dream shifts from 'I want a restaurant' to 'My dream isn't complete without Naveen, and therefore I'll stop caring about it because he's a frog and I can't live it without him.
And, predictable as it is, we now have Tiana, Mulan, Belle and Pocahontas, because feminism only goes thus far and only a woman who fits a "traditional" formula of bad ass-ness can avoid being shamed for her legitimate choices (which isn't sexist at all, you know). Sigh. Not going to vote for any because I think ALL of the princesses are admirably strong characters regardless of their flaws. What Pocahontas said about Kokoum was actually spot on because she merely described his merits and honorable traits that were considered valuable in her society, which doesn't by any means make her an anti-feminist.
Tiana wanted Naveen to be a PART of her dream and while she ended up choosing him ultimately at some point of her life because the chance of turning back into a human and as a result - an opportunity to keep working towards her goal was forcibly taken away from her AGAINST her will due to the curse, she used her completely legitimate RIGHT to stay by the side of a person she CHOSE to be with. It is up to NO ONE BUT HER to make this conscious decision and said decision does NOT make her anti-feminist. I would say that her kissing Naveen for money in the very beginning was an incredibly ridiculous, contrived and terribly OOC plot twist (not to mention it addressing a terribly sexist message of a lower social standing/working class woman kissing a more privileged male for money) considering how it contradicted basically everything that had been established about her character and her independent/hardworking attitude in the beginning but taking PaTF's extremely problematic nature and inconsistency it's not much of an argument in favour of Tiana's supposed "anti-feminism".
And on this note, I'm done with this poll. Feminism and me don't seem to sit well together lol
Pocahontas- but-how?! She is a strong pillar in her community, and just like princesslulluby said, her gender is never questioned! She is independent and even chooses to stay with her tribe instead of leaving for London to be with John, because she feels her leadership is needed- and her father intentionally puts no pressure on her either way! She makes her own decisions throughout this movie, that is an idea that is constantly reinforced! Whether her motivation be love or not, she still makes them herself. How can she not be in the top three?
