Eva Longoria says she was an ugly duckling as a child, but she won the Miss Corpus Christi beauty pageant in 1998. She grew up on the family ranch near that city, then earned a degree in kinesiology (human body mechanics) while becoming active in her college's theater department. After graduation, she worked as a model, then sought out an agent and came to Los Angeles, where, in her first roles, she appeared in a stage production of What the Rabbi Saw and played a stewardess on Beverly Hills, 90210. She spent 2½ years on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, playing a former prostitute who tried to kill another woman and ended up in an insane asylum.

In 2003, she co-hosted The Talent Agency with comic-actor Alex Thomas, a syndicated amateur competition that aired in the wee hours on the weekends in most cities, and was quickly scuttled. She joined the cast of the 2003-04 revival of Dragnet with Ed O'Neill as Joe Friday just in time to see the show cancelled. And then she found fame as Gabrielle Solis, the rich housewife with a bad marriage and a thing for the yard boy, on the cul-de-sac drama Desperate Housewives with Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, and Nicolette Sheridan.

On the strength of Longoria's TV name recognition, she has become a spokeswoman for Hanes underwear and L'Oreal beauty products, and has been featured in a few movies, most notably as a rookie federal agent in The Sentinel with Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland. In a 2004 interview with Rolling Stone she mentioned a fondness for vibrators. The producers of Desperate Housewives were subsequently deluged with sex toys sent by the series' fans, and reportedly asked Longoria not to mention the subject again.

She was married for three years to actor Tyler Christopher, best known for a recurring role on the soap General Hospital. In 2007 she married San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker, and professionally redubbed herself Eva Longoria Parker.
