My head cracks around and I watch as Prim walks forward toward the stage. Any second now...
I was right. “Prim! Prim!” came the cry, and Catnip walked straight forward, pushing Prim past her. “I volunteer,” she gasped. “I volunteer as tribute!”
The Mayor and Effie Trinket are saying something, but the words are lost on me. Prim is screaming, her arms wrapped around Katniss. “No Katniss! No! You can’t go!”
“Prim, let go,” she said harshly. I walked forward and gently lift Prim up from the ground.
“Up you go, Catnip,” I say. I take Prim back to her mother before returning to where I was standing before her name had been called.
Effie Trinket calls out the boy’s name, and it isn’t mine. Only one thing to do now. “I volunteer for Peeta Mellerk!” I shout out, walking forward and straight toward the stage.
Katniss’s eyes widen but she says nothing as I stand beside her and close my eyes for a second. The crowd is silent, and I open my eyes again. They are using the old District 12 gesture, meaning good-bye to someone you love. My eyes travel to the face of the girl next to me. Katniss Everdeen. I long to hold her hand, to tell her it will be alright. I can see the confusion and pain in her eyes.
