I know it would make the whole story really boring but I think if it was a real situation then it would make more sense and be a lot less risky

Kind of, but not rhetorically. I wondered if there was something physically stopping them from being able to do so.

I've seen that asked somewhere before, and someone else answered that the eagles would be too attention grabbing. The whole idea was sneaking into Mordor.

And of course that wouldn't make much of a story.
