Deep in the Eribourne Forest stood the massive castle-like school known as The Eribourne Academy. The forest was named after the academy in case you were wondering. The academy was famous, or more rather infamous in that nobody in the surrounding cities dared go near it thanks to the dark rumors surrounding the academy. However, it is the job of the police to handle situations despite their own personal feelings and that is what led young Jennifer Watson, an eager cop, to the academy.
The sound of hushed whispers was the first thing that Jenny heard upon coming to. Lots of senses assaulted her at once. She heard whispering and beeping and bangs and clacks and all sorts of other noises that her muddled brain could not make sense of all at once. Lights flashed and danced across her eyes as she had yet to try opening them, nor had she become lucid enough to do so. She felt the touch of metal against her bare skin and the thought flickered in the back of her head that she wasn’t clothed. Though it was the smells that managed to wake her up completely. Amongst a variety of horrible and sickening smells, one shone through that her cop instincts instantly recognized. The smell of gunpowder! Gunpowder was not used in standard issue firearms these days and haven’t in quite a few years, but Jenny always had her favorite gun strapped to her ankle at all times. The gun was a rather old antique that she kept in perfect condition. Having an ankle gun wasn’t the most effective weapon, but she still kept it there. After recognizing the smell of gunpowder, Jenny’s senses sharpened and she opened her eyes. She winced at the lights pointed directly at her temporarily blinded her and she turned her head to the side before opening them again. She was indeed naked and strapped to a metal table, there were machines making beeps and bangs and clacks, her weapons lay on a table just out of reach with her ankle gun taken apart and the gunpowder dumped out, but most notably was the multitude of people that were in the room. She tried to count them, but her mind couldn’t make it past five before she lost her track. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Calm down! she told herself. Think…just think back to how you got here.
---------------------------------------------
It all started about two days ago…well actually, it all started when Jenny first decided to become a cop. Jenny was always full of ideals about justice and making sure wrongdoers got what was coming to them. She came from a long line of cops so that wasn’t too big of a deal, but what the problem was is that of all the cops in her family, she was the only female. Her mother worked in the HQ alright, but as a file clerk. HER mother was a secretary and HER mother before that was a secretary and HER mother before that handled coffee runs and so on and so forth, but Jenny broke the pattern and she enrolled herself into the academy and she passed every single exam with flying colors. The problem is that despite her having a natural born talent for the job, her family only saw a reckless girl who was gonna end up getting hurt.
Well Jenny was not the type of person to let someone else tell her what she can or cannot do, and despite her family’s very outspoken objections, she was soon accepted into the force and was ready to work her way up to handling the serious crimes, but she wasn’t the only stubborn member of her family and her father took it upon himself to see to it that Jenny never handled more than a traffic violation. Jenny tried to transfer, but her request was denied each and every time. She tried to convince the higher ups to ignore her father, but they weren’t willing to go out of their way to help.
This proceeded for a long time, but Jenny persevered, which brings us to two days ago. Jenny had just returned from yet another grunt work assignment to find that a small crowd had formed in one of the briefing rooms. Jenny peeked around to listen in through the open door. It seemed that there was some sort of commotion happening at the Eribourne Institute. Jenny nearly shivered whenever she thought of that place. It was just so creepy. A random academy in the middle of a dark forest that nobody knows anything about? Sounds a bit too Frankenstein for her tastes, but it did seem to give her an opening. After all, none of the other officers wanted to go anywhere near the place either. The opportunity blinded her to noticing that they had noticed her presence. It took her a little while to notice that they were all staring at her and Sergeant Davilus, who was leading the briefing, asked rather calmly if she needed anything. It was now or never and in a faltering voice that gave away her lack of experience, she volunteered for the mission.
Davilus denied her request, obviously and an hour later, she was back on the streets handing out tickets and checking parking meters. It was clear to her now that hoping for an opportunity to come along would not work. She’d have to take the opportunity from someone else. The officer who got the Eribourne assignment would likely not leave just yet so she could get a headstart and if all goes well, she could have the situation fully under control before he got there. They would have no choice but to take her seriously.
--------------------------------------------------
And that brings us to being naked and strapped down in some twisted laboratory. She didn’t remember exactly what happened after she got to the academy except that she had barely been there for a second when….something…shocked her. She must have given her position away and somehow got knocked out.
It was then that the voices got closer and Jenny was able to distinguish what was being said. She shut her eyes to hide the fact that she was awake and listened closely.
”The preparations are complete?” came a loud and firm voice, obviously the highest ranking of the group.
”Yes sir. The Ocular Synthesis is complete, a second voice said. Ocular Synthesis? What were they talking about? Ocular has to do with the eyes, right? Were they planning to do something to her eyes?
”Poor girl. She probably has no idea what she stumbled onto. But she’s a liability,” the first voice said again. He didn’t sound as sincere as his words.
”Implantation process is ready.” a third voice said from a little further away.
”Very well,” first voice again. “We will proceed immediately.” Jenny couldn’t see them, but she could tell that the first man was right beside her. As if to confirm her suspicions, the man reached down and brushed some hair out of her eyes. ”Be thankful. If you were awake for this, it would cause you unthinkable agony.”
Jenny’s finger twitched at his words and she was now noticeably spooked. Well…noticeably if you were looking for it, but the others seemed not to notice. She had to act now. Before they did whatever they were doing.
”Begin the procedure. Remember that once we begin, we must not stop it.”
Why?! Why wouldn’t her body move!
That was the last thought she had before she heard a machine roar to life.
Jenny woke up screaming as if she were in terrible agony. She bolted upright in her bed, her eyes wide with terror, and she seemed to be completely unaware of her surroundings. Meanwhile, several men tried to wrestle her back down while trying to yell over her in calm voices. Yelling while sounding calm was a lot harder than it sounded and it took almost ten minutes to get Jenny to the point where she was even partially lucid. It started with her realizing that these men were not the same men who she had just seen. Her second observation was that this room was also not the same. In fact, she appeared to be in some sort of infirmary. Was all of that just a bad dream? Was she injured at the academy and taken somewhere to recover? She had to voice some of these questions or she’d never learn what was going on.
Jenny: “Where….”
“You are inside the Eribourne Academy. This specific place is the infirmary. How are you feeling?” responded one of the men, most likely the head nurse.
“Why am I here? What happened to me?” Jenny shot at the man, ignoring his question completely. The man didn’t seem to mind, though.
“There was an incident that left you unconscious. You were discovered by one of the science staff.”
That explained the scientists in her…dream?
“You were taken here to be treated. How are you feeling? Is there any discomfort?”
Jenny listened to the man this time and examined herself, checking all the usual places one would get injured. “I don’t think so…I feel fine.”
“How about your eyes? Are you seeing clearly?”
Jenny: “Ya, I can see fin-….wait…” Jenny stopped halfway. Eyes….that made her remember. There was some kind of mention about her eyes in her dream…or maybe… “Why….would there be something wrong with my-AGH!”
Her sudden yell caused all of the staff to lean in closer, some to see what was wrong, but most seemed…interested…as if they were watching a delightful experiment.
The head nurse was the first to speak. “What are you feeling? What are you seeing?!”
Jenny tried to form words. She tried to respond, but it was just so…so much pressure….she couldn’t do it. It was killing her. She had to make it stop. She needed it to stop….make it….stop…
“MAKE…IT…STOOOOOOOOOOOP!” She finally screamed loud enough that it could likely be heard echoing throughout the halls.
