Olicity just keeps chugging along, gaining fans, awards. and accolades.
It’s happening at such an astonishing rate, that it’s sometimes hard to forget there was a time when Stephen Amell was supposed to just look pretty and Emily Bett Rickards was working in a dog shop.
Ever since our favorite leading lady chewed on that red pen and Oliver approached her with his very first excuse, we’ve been all about Olicity. Maybe it was the chemistry between these two sensational actors. Maybe it was the writing. Perhaps it was just a matter of fate. Either way, at this point, we have to wonder: what would our TV viewing experience be like without Oliver’s puppy dog eyes and Felicity innuendo-ridden rambles?
We honestly can’t imagine. And we don’t really want to.
Oliver and Felicity’s relationship has had a bit of everything: innuendos, shiftlessness, friendship, embarrassment, fancy dresses, suits, leather, short skirts,
, tears, smiles, and of course, porches and sunsets. But it’s also had a lot of quiet moments, a lot of building blocks.
That’s the mark of a great love story, how it gently intertwines the big and the mundane, the common and the extraordinary. We never imagined, three years ago, when Oliver Queen first got off the island, that we’d be waxing poetic about the
. But here we are, and we might as well give credit where credit is due.
So, in honor of Oliver and Felicity, here are the twelve underrated moments that made
fall in love with these two crazy kids.
Olicity wasn’t even in the plans then, people tell me. You’re finding clues where there are none. But, but …I tell them. Look at Stephen Amell’s face. Just
at it. That’s the face of an actor who knows something. Felicity makes a little quip, and it’s not strange, she’s made quips before, and Oliver has smiled before, but there’s a moment there, before he even gets to ask her for help, where his face softens and everything just…shifts.
2. Don’t worry Felicity, they don’t send blondes there.
It’s not just about Oliver making a joke, though,
! It’s mostly about Felicity’s easy response, and about the fact that Oliver actually leans forward to check. I repeat, he leans forward to check her hair. They’re joking in the middle of a tense moment, and it’s light and fun. Oliver is having fun. Before this, I wasn’t even sure Oliver knew what that word meant.
This moment gets me for many, many reasons. One, Felicity is never one to downplay her abilities in front of Oliver. Two, she actually looked him up. Like, she did a background check on Oliver, probably long before she found out he was the Arrow. And, as if that isn’t enough, there’s also Oliver’s standard smile/laugh
thing that he only ever does with Felicity.
Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that Oliver doesn’t seem to get any pop-culture reference, even if those references predate his time on the island? I really hope Felicity is taking this summer to show him the wonders of Netflix (among other things). Felicity is obviously angry, and she doesn’t really hold back. Everyone seems to hold back with Oliver, his family, hell, even Diggle at this point — but not Felicity, no. She is the exception to that rule. (And to every other rule.)
5. I would like you to pull your head out of Central City and get back in the game.
Felicity’s response of, “Sure, just after you get yours out of your ass” is not the only brilliant thing in this scene. The fact that she’s willing to utter those words to Oliver is just as important. We’ve already established Felicity isn’t shy about telling Oliver what she thinks, and in this particular episode, she’ll also prove that she is more than the bumbling love-struck assistant. She’s earned the right to the moniker Oliver bestows upon her later, when he asks for forgiveness. Partner.
It’s a gift, says Oliver, but what’s really a gift for us viewers is the lightness Felicity brings, not just to the show in general, but to Oliver in particular. Sullen Oliver is, somehow, just by being in proximity with Felicity, less grumpy, much more willing to crack a joke, and
7. You might have noticed that I talk a lot.
It has not escaped my attention, Oliver replies, and it’s not a joke, not merely a wisecrack. It’s true. Oliver Queen pays attention to what Felicity Smoak does. (And what she says, and who she dates, and even what she wears). In fact, he probably pays more attention to Felicity that he did to some of his girlfriend’s when he was still with them.
One of the few light moments in the angst-fest that is Season 3 — it’s not about what Oliver says, it’s what’s behind the words. It’s the fact that a proud and obviously beaten man, who lost both his mother and his company, is willing to open up enough to accept someone else’s help. It might not seem like much, but if you’re fluent in Oliverian, you can tell the truth. This is tantamount to a love declaration.
He’s already said how he feels. He’s pushed her away. She’s stated that she’s not going to wait for him. And yet Oliver can’t stop bringing up his feelings. He doesn’t care if she reciprocates. He genuinely just wants her to know that he appreciates the person she is. Tell me again that Oliver hasn’t changed — I dare you.
How many times have we seen Oliver Queen lose control? Not many. And when Oliver
lose control, it’s usually out of love, hardly ever out of anger. But in this precise moment, Oliver loses it. Diggle delivers a good speech, and we don’t get to find out what Oliver was going to do or say because when he reaches Felicity’s office, she’s kissing Ray. And that’s it. That’s all she wrote. Bye control. Oliver has been jealous before. He’s been angry many, many times. But this is something different. This is the total obliteration of all the walls he’s erected to keep people out
I know I said underrated moments, but I’m not talking about the real I love you; I’m talking about the dream one. Because even if the dream ends badly, even if in this particular instance Oliver ends up dead, this is still the thing he’s dreaming about as he’s recuperating from almost dying. He’s literally dreaming of telling Felicity he loves her. She is, quite literally, the last thing he thinks about before his “death”, and then, the first thing he thinks about
The words are big, but Felicity’s reaction, in my mind, is even bigger. She doesn’t say anything. Her eyes sparkle, she bites her lips and she leans into Oliver, but she doesn’t actually say anything. There are no words. At this point, they don’t need them. She’s all in, and, finally, so is he.
Agree? Disagree? Have any other Olicity moment you think should have made the list? It was hard to narrow it down, so come share with us in the comments. We’d love
