When my mother used to read me the Pippi-stories, she always told me how Pippi was originally 'born': Astrid Lindgren's daughter was ill and she asked her mother to make up a story about "Pippi Langstrump". And so, based upon the sort of silly name, Astrid Lindgren made up a very special caracter.
And I used to listen to my mother and imagine I was the one for whom the story was invented, and that Pippi was my own personal friend.
