Heh, you'd be pleasantly surprised on how many people do mean it literally and how many people use that term because they think retards are funny, at least in NZ anyway. I agree on the stupendous stupidity part though (alliteration for the win). I use the term in that exact way, but calling someone a retard, even if آپ don't mean it like that, is still offensive.
