After a long hiatus interrupted only by a 90-minute Victorian special, the BBC drama has begun filming its fourth season. The series’ official Twitter account announced its return on Wednesday with a short video from co-creator, writer, and executive producer Mark Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes, older brother to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock.

“We’re back,” Gatiss says. “The game is on.”

Gatiss’ slate also names Rachel Talalay as the director of the season 4 premiere. Talalay, who counts 

s most recent season finale among her directorial credits, will be the first woman to direct an episode of 

Cumberbatch says that he is “genuinely thrilled to be back filming

with all the cast and crew,” adding, “I can’t wait for everyone to see season 4. But you will have to wait … though not for long … And it will be worth it.” 

Gatiss warns EW that this will be “a major, life-changing series for the regulars. The repercussions of Moriarty’s apparent return are far-reaching. It’s very big stuff.”
