Sum 41‘s Deryck Whibley is getting a second chance at life after his troubles with alcohol resulted in a four-month hospital stay, and he’s taking advantage of his new opportunity with the release of “War,” a track the singer says saved his life. The band just released a video for the song that you can watch above.
Whibley says, “I feel that this song literally saved my life. I was at my absolute lowest point of what seemed like a never-ending recovery. When I was at a tipping point of falling back into drinking or staying the course of recovery, I grabbed a pencil and paper instead of a bottle and started writing. Whenever I had any thoughts of giving up, I would read these lyrics to myself over and over again. They helped remind me of what it was that I was fighting for, and that I needed to keep fighting harder. Giving up was not an option.”
As for the Djay Brawner-directed video, it’s very symbolic of the singer’s journey as he wanders through an airplane graveyard, picking mementos out of the sand that represent his past life. The vocalist burns the items and says it’s a reminder of how he “crashed and burned” and that the graveyard was “a place for a funeral for my past.”
, which is due on Oct. 7 via Hopeless Records. You can pre-order the disc via iTunes or in a variety of formats via the band’s online merchandise store. Plus, Target will have a special edition of the disc with bonus tracks that you can pre-order here. Look for Sum 41 on tour at these stops.
