And Kripke did it again...
The big fuss about third Winchester for a long time already and when the time comes when we finally see him, then it turns out that he's already dead. The guy(Kripke) definitely knows, how to fool fans.

fanfly picked having the real Adam already be dead was a nice twist actually:
It was a good twist. Sad, but good. I also think it would have interfered with the dynamic of the show, but after having experienced a bit of that in Jump the Shark, I think it would have been kind of cool. I liked what Adam brought out in Sam and Dean, their different approaches to him. And personally, I think it adds a whole other dimension to John's character that's very interesting. He's always been a secretive S.O.B. but I actually think Adam proves that he regrets the way he raised Sam and Dean. It was too late for them, but it wasn't too late for Adam. He tried to redeem himself a bit with his third son. :(

tinkymel picked having the real Adam already be dead was a nice twist actually:
I thought it was an interesting way to remind the boys that their father was a man. He had needs too, and he wasn't a saint. Also, It was a nice way to say look here is a brother, but we know that the fans won't accept him so we will show him and kill him. It allows for the brothers to explore their new roles in the hunting and how they feel about how they live. If you noticed the boys have changed. I love the line at the end where Dean tells Sam he is a lot like their father. Sam thinks it is a compliment, but I got the feeling that Dean didn't mean it that way.

Dean-girlx picked not really..it's not like he was gonna get in the car and drive with them:
I agree with fanfly =(

&& also tinkymel -- it wasn't a compliment! John was an obsessed bastard who didn't care about anything but revenge. [[I LOVE John - I do! but he was .. it's just a fact =P]] and now Sam is turning into him. he doesn't CARE about anything but getting revenge on Lillith, even though using his freakin' powers could have insanely huge consequences.

i loved this episode...i've been waiting for a long time for dean or anyone to say to sam that he is a lot like john...i've always thought that....the whole episode was done very well and it didn't seem like adam was trying 2 screw over the dynamic.

I couldn't agree more, Lucy, why another bro?? I've tried to see a purpose behind it, but I can't. It didn't advance the storyline, it wasn't lighthearted or entertaining, it didn't have a critical message or moral. Nor was it just an interesting sidebar; it dealt with too passionate an issue to be screwed around with.

Of course, John was no different than the boys, he was human and it would be expected that he have fleeting relationships with women. So he finds out when the kid is twelve that he has another son. This I don't get: why on Earth would he establish a relationship with the kid when he was so deep into his obsession of hunting down Azazel? Dean would have been 23, Sam off at Stanford, and he decides at that point to take a huge left turn and potentially endanger the lives of two innocent people?? Wouldn't Azazel have chortled with glee to find out that John had another son and girlfriend that he could use to force John to stop pursuing him!! Seriously, do the writers really expect us to believe that John would be that stupid??? It would have been far more realistic, and true to his character, for them to have John harden his heart even more and tell himself this was one more loss he would have to endure, for the sake of all of them (or better still, IMO, to avoid the issue all together).

In the end, the best thing that could be said about this episode is that it showed how much Sam was like John, but that had become apparent ever since "Dead Man's Blood" in Season 1. So aside from Adam's death being totally necessary, the entire concept was totally UNnecessary. Kripke would have known that this episode would piss off a lot of people. That's fine if it was essential to the storyline. But it wasn't, not by a very long shot.

Ok when I first found out there was gonna be a 3rd brother I was furious! (and this was only partly because I found out through spoilers) but I just could not see how he would fit into the story or why the (true) brothers would really wanna have anything to do with him.
But to be fair if Kripke and Co really felt they HAD to do this then they managed it ok! I'm never gonna say its one of my fave eps or that I overly liked it but its happened and the Adam character only lasted one ep, so we can move on and forget about him if we wish to! hehe

(Oh how I've missed reading comments and commenting on picks! So here I go!)
I completely agree with 67impala, in that why would John put his newly found 2nd family in danger after how careful he had to be with Dean and Sam?!?! Other than for purely selfish reasons and wanting to give a child of his an opportunity to live a 'normal' life. But Adam would have had that with out John in the picture right? I think I'm slightly confused by John's actions here! But John's involvement does show that, like fanfly said, he didn't think that hunting was a good way for a child to grow up. And for this reason I don't agree with Dean-girlx to a certain extent. Yes its true up until now the only thing we've seen that drives John is the extent of his revenge and hatred towards Azazel (any any thing else he could get his hands on). However the way he treated Adam, like a son and someone he loved enough to celebrate birthdays with and teach to drive he did care about other people and perhaps he wasn't as obsessed and single minded as we always thought!

(ok I think I will now of thoroughly confused everyone else not only myself lol! I'm gonna stop rambling and contradicting myself now :D hehe)
