Ch 1: Beatrice Taylor ran into Andy Taylor's office with a piece of paper in her hand. She looked worried because a message was in her hand. She thought the message she had gotten on the telephone a few منٹ پہلے was urgent and it worried her.
"Hi, Aunt Bee. Looking for Andy?" Barney Fife asked.
"Yes, Barney. Where is Andy?" Aunt Bee asked.
"You look worried. What made آپ come here, Aunt Bee?" Barney asked, seeing the worried look on Aunt Bee's face.
"I have a message for Andy, Barney. When is Andy coming back?" Aunt Bee asked in the same worried voice she had when she talked to Andy's friend on the telephone not too long پہلے that afternoon.
"He'll be here in a few minutes, Aunt Bee. He's getting a haircut," Barney said.
"I'll wait and give him the message myself," Aunt Bee said, waving the piece of paper around her face.
"I'll give it to him," Barney volunteered.
"No, no, Barney. I want to do it," she said.
Aunt Bee didn't want to tell Barney that the telephone call was about murder. That was why she was worried about Andy and it sounded dangerous to her. She didn't want Barney to worry right away either so that was why she didn't say anything right away about the telephone message from Sheriff Jeremy Cline.
"May I see the message, Aunt Bee? It might be urgent," Barney said.
"It is urgent, Barney. I don't want آپ to get upset right away. That's why I want to give the message to Andy myself," Aunt Bee کہا worriedly.
"Have it your way, Aunt Bee," Barney said.
That's when Andy walked in from the barbershop.
"I'm back, Barn. Any new messages while I was out?" Andy asked.
"Just one. Aunt Bee," Barney said.
"Aunt Bee? When did she come in?" Andy asked.
"She's here right now," Barney said. "Aunt Bee! I wasn't expecting you. What's wrong? آپ look a little worried," Andy said, seeing the worried look on his aunt's face.
"You got a message at the house, Andy. From a friend of yours. I have the message right here," Aunt Bee said.
"Why didn't آپ give the message to Barney, Aunt Bee?" Andy asked.
"I didn't want Barney to worry about it right away and I wanted to give آپ the message myself. You'll see why it was an urgent message," Aunt Bee کہا worriedly and handed him the piece of paper.
Andy took the piece of paper from Aunt Bee and unfolded it twice as she had folded it.
"Who is it from?" Andy asked her.
"Sheriff Jeremy Cline," Aunt Bee answered.
"Good ol' Jeremy," Andy کہا with a smile on his face.
"Who's Jeremy Cline?" Barney asked.
He knew the name wasn't familiar to him so he had to ask.
"He's a good old friend of mine, Barn. Jeremy Cline is a sheriff like I am. We go way back," Andy کہا to his deputy.
"That far back, huh?" Barney asked.
"Yes," Andy said.
"I wonder what made Jeremy call," Andy said, starting to read the message Aunt Bee had written for him.
"Well, what did Jeremy want, Andy?" Aunt Bee asked.
"Tell us," Barney echoed in.
"I don't want to worry آپ anymore, Aunt Bee. I'll tell آپ at suppertime. آپ go right back ہوم and do whatever آپ need to do," Andy told her.
"All right," she کہا and کہا good - bye to the sheriff and his deputy.
"Well, Ange, since Aunt Bee's gone, are آپ going to tell me what the message said?" Barney asked.
"All right, Barn. Jeremy wants me to help him on a case his department has been working on for almost ten years. They've never gotten close to solving it. I'll call him now and see what the story is on the case," Andy said, picking up the telephone.
"Sara, give me Sheriff Jeremy Cline at the Milwaukee Sheriff's Department," Andy said.
While waiting for his friend to come on the line, Barney took a look at the message Aunt Bee had دیا Andy and read it. He also had a worried look and didn't like the looks of it either.
"I don't like this, Ange. I won't go for it either," Barney whispered to his best friend and cousin.
"I don't either, Barn, but if a friend asks I have to help," Andy کہا as he heard his friend's voice come onto the other end of the line.
"Hi, Sheriff. Sheriff Taylor," Andy said.
"Hi, Andy. I see your sweet and lovely aunt gave آپ my message," Jeremy Cline said.
"She did. She sounded worried about your urgent message, Jeremy. Why don't آپ tell me what آپ want me to help آپ with?" Andy asked.
"Well, Andy, this case has been going on for twelve years now. I'd like to see it come to a close now. Do آپ remember my mentioning my deputy, Andrew Jones? We're still working on his case," Jeremy said.
"I think I remember آپ mentioning that deputy of yours, Jeremy. Wasn't he the young 'un?" Andy asked.
"Right on, Andy. We're still trying to figure out who his murderer is and we're coming up with nothing," Jeremy said.
"How young was your deputy?" Andy asked.
"He was thirty when he got murdered," Jeremy answered.
"That is young. He has his whole life ahead of him," Andy said, hearing the age of Andrew Jones.
"I know, Andy. We all miss him dearly. He was a good deputy, too," Jeremy said.
"I'll bet he was," Andy کہا understandingly.
"You're lucky آپ still have your deputy," Jeremy said.
"I know I am. I'd hate it if Barney was dead," Barney said.
"You know how I feel, don't you?" Jeremy asked.
"Of course," Andy said.
"One thing about my deputy, Andy. He left behind a daughter who is handicapped. She is in a wheelchair and can't care for herself," Jeremy said.
"Ain't that sad. Where's the girl now?" Andy asked.
"She's about twenty and lives with Andrew's mom."
"How long have آپ been working on this case?" Andy asked his long - time friend.
"Almost thirteen years now. We'd like to close it up," Jeremy said.
"That's a long time, Jeremy. Most people would have دیا up سے طرف کی now," Andy said.
"We don't like to give up. He's been on the police force since he was eighteen," Jeremy added.
Andy didn't respond right away. He decided to let Jeremy continue talking about Andrew.
"What did آپ say was your deputy's name was?" Andy asked.
"Andrew Jones. He liked to be called Andy liked you," Jeremy said.
"Ain't that funny," Andy said.
He didn't laugh. Barney was اگلے to the telephone, listening to the entire conversation between the two sheriffs. He was interested. He didn't want to interrupt so he stayed put and silent. Andy knew Barney was listening.
"Why don't آپ tell me مزید about your deputy's murder, Jeremy?" Andy asked.
Barney didn't like to hear the word murder. He whispered to Andy he was going on patrol and Andy nodded okay.
"I'd rather not say it on the phone, Andy. If you'd like I'd be happy to send it سے طرف کی mail so آپ can read it for yourself," Jeremy said.
"All right, Jeremy. You've been talking about it everyday for twelve years and I understand آپ don't feel like talking about your deputy's murder right now. Go ahead and send me everything you've got," Andy said.
"All right. I also have a سوال for you, Andy," Jeremy said.
"What's that, Jeremy?" Andy asked as he watched Barney leave the office.
"I want آپ to help me on this case, Andy. Would آپ help me?" Jeremy asked.
"Well, I don't know, Jeremy. Maybe I should remind آپ Mayberry doesn't have murder," Andy reminded his friend.
"I know that, Andy. I do know that, Andy. Would آپ please help me?" Jeremy asked.
Andy was quiet because he was thinking about it. He didn't want the entire town of Mayberry to know he was working on a murder cold case.
"All right, Jeremy. I'll help you," Andy said.
"Thanks, Andy. I knew I could count on you," Jeremy said.
He promised Andy he would send مزید details on the cold case in the mail later that week.
"All right, Jeremy. I'll look for it," Andy کہا and the two hung up.
Later that afternoon, Andy was talking with a skinny, blonde man about the cold case murder.
"I heard from Barney that آپ two started working on a cold case."
"Yes, we did. He just wanted my help with a cold case murder that's been going on for over years now, so I کہا yes."
Barney rejoined Andy in the office several منٹ later.
"Hi, Ange. I'm back," Barney said.
"Hi, Barn," Andy said.
"I see you're finished with your phone call," Barney said.
"Yup," Andy said.
"What did your sheriff friend say?" Barney asked.
"All he wanted was me to help him with a cold case murder his department has been working on for over ten years. I کہا I would help," Andy said.
"We've never had a murder here in Mayberry, Andy. Are آپ changing things around?" Barney asked.
"No, I'm not, Barney. All I'm doing is helping Sheriff Cline with his cold case. Will آپ do me a favor?" Andy asked.
"What's that?" Barney asked.
"Will آپ not tell the townspeople we're on a cold case? I want this kept quiet," Andy said.
"Sure, Ange. Whatever آپ say. Whatever say," Barney said.
Andy and Barney left the office around their usual time and they headed for Andy's house in the patrol car.
"I'll see آپ tomorrow, Ange," Barney کہا as Andy got out of the passenger's seat.
"Don't آپ want to come in, Barney and eat رات کا کھانا with us?" Andy asked, inviting Barney over.
"All right, Ange. If آپ say so," Barney کہا and took the ignition key out of the car and they stopped the engine.
Barney followed Andy into the house.
"I'm home, Aunt Bee!" Andy called once they entered the house.
Aunt Bee put the timer on the stove and entered the living room.
"Hello, Andy, Barney," Aunt Bee کہا and gave the two men a hug.
Andy and Barney returned the hug back.
"Andy, آپ got mail," Aunt Bee said, giving her nephew the mail.
"Thank you, Aunt Bee," Andy said, taking the mail from Aunt Bee.
"Did آپ talk to Jeremy at all today?" Aunt Bee asked.
"Oh yes, Aunt Bee, I did. Jeremy just wanted me to help him with a cold case murder."
"A cold case murder? Andy, آپ didn't tell him yes, did you? If آپ did, be careful. We don't have murder here in Mayberry, آپ know," Aunt Bee reminded him.
"I know we don't, Aunt Bee. I told Jeremy we don't have murder here," Andy said.
"I told Andy the same thing, Aunt Bee," Barney said.
Opie came downstairs just then.
"Hi, Pa," Opie said.
"Hi, Son," Andy said, giving Opie a hug.
"Aunt Bee told me you're working on a murder. Is that true?" Opie asked.
"Well, yes, Opie, it is true," Andy said.
Andy gave Aunt Bee a look telling her he didn't want Opie to know that.
"The boy's old enough to know, Andy. He's going to college sooner یا later so it's all right for him to know you're working on a ten - سال - old murder," Aunt Bee said.
"The case is ten years old, Pa? What kind of case is this?" Opie asked.
"I don't want to share this kind of information with the family. Jeremy's sending the details tomorrow," Andy said.
"Who's Jeremy, Pa?" Opie asked.
"He's a friend of mine, Op. I think he has a son your age," Andy said, remembering Jeremy Cline had two children who were both in high school.
"What's his name? Does he go to Mayberry High, too?" Opie asked.
"No, no, Op. He doesn't live in North Carolina," Andy said.
"Where does this Cline kid live?" Opie asked.
"Milwaukee," Andy answered.
"I'd like to meet this kid," Opie said.
"Maybe آپ will, Son," Andy said.
The three of them heard the timer go off in the kitchen.
"Dinner is served!" Aunt Bee called from the باورچی خانے, باورچی خانہ and the three men walked into the باورچی خانے, باورچی خانہ and joined Aunt Bee and sat down at the table.
"Doesn't that look delicious, Aunt Bee," Andy said.
"Thank you, Andy," she said.
"It does," Barney said, agreeing with Andy.
Everybody ate in silence that night, so there was no chitchat about the deputy sheriff's murder case. That was the one thing Andy didn't bother mentioning to Aunt Bee was his solving a murder case about a deputy sheriff.
