Talented actor ... Dylan O’Brien learnt everything he knows at the school of Teen Wolf.
IT’S not easy being the only human in a supernatural high-school clique.
You’re always being killed and coming back to life or being possessed and turning “dark”.
But Dylan O’Brien, who plays a werewolf’s best friend in surprisingly popular teen drama series
Teen Wolf, wouldn’t have it any other way.
“That place is my home, literally, in terms of being an actor,” says the 23-year-old Californian. “I wasn’t an actor before that show, unless you count a few months of auditioning. I’ve really looked at that as my acting school. I’ve been on a set every day for three years and that’s really what I needed because I was thrust into this industry without any idea of what I was doing.”

Supernatural drama hit ... Teen Wolf actor Dylan O\'Brien.
O’Brien plays Stiles, whose world got hairy when his best mate Scott (Tyler Posey) was turned by a werewolf. O’Brien was supposed to be the show’s comic relief sidekick and Posey the moody heart-throb, but O’Brien has won his own legion of ardent supporters — as evidenced by the huge cheers he received at this year’s
Teen Wolf panel during geek-fest Comic-Con.
Yet O’Brien swears that, unlike high school, the set of Teen Wolf is not a popularity contest.
“It’s a really rare thing with this cast: we all get along so well. I’ve made best friends for life.

Everyone was always joking at us, ‘Yeah, wait until the third season, you’ll all hate each other’. We were always like, ‘No, it’s not gonna happen, man!’ And it hasn’t ... Tyler Posey is one of my best friends.”
Thanks to the third season’s “Dark Stiles” storyline, O’Brien moved up a level in “acting school”, breaking out of wise-cracking mode to dabble with madness and being a monster.
In the current fourth series, he’s facing an all-too-human issue: romantic hiccups with his werecoyote girlfriend, Malia (played by Shelley Hennig).

“I can display so many things: we get to be romantic, we get to be funny, we get to be scared, we get to be scary ... It’s the best training I could have asked for,” he says.
The schooling is paying off. This month, O’Brien is the lead in movie
The Maze Runner— a potential “The Next Hunger Games” style franchise. His ultimate aim is to direct films, but O’Brien has applied the brakes a little after Maze Runner.

“I understand a lot more of what goes into it now. I would never want to take away an opportunity from someone else until I was absolutely positive I was ready to command a set.”
