Alaric and Jo’s last day of singledom doesn’t go smoothly when Lily’s blood thirst returns and Elena takes the cure. Here is a recap of the
episode “I’d Leave My Happy Home For You.”
Grading papers the day before his wedding, Alaric senses something lurking in the hallway and investigates. He gets kidnapped. Over in the med center, a police officer requests a private chat with Jo, and ... surprise! He’s actually a male stripper. Elena and Bonnie join her for a bachelorette party dance, then bring her to an empty diner, while Stefan and Damon bring Alaric to his bachelor party at a bar. For parties, there’s a lot of talk about life. Alaric wants Damon to tell Stefan about the cure. Bonnie wants Elena to be sure that she still desires a human life. Stefan wants Caroline to come home. And Jo just wants more food. Elena bails on the party when Damon texts her to meet in the town square.
Having to take time off from the deputy training program to heal, Matt asks Tyler how it’s going. Tyler responds with a rage-filled rant about how he’s terrified he’ll have to kill someone and be a werewolf again. Matt skedaddles out of there. Alaric finds him drinking alone, and Matt warns him to leave town before he ends up dead.
At the Grill, Lily almost loses control. Stefan tries to stage an intervention by showing her how to transfer her hunger into a socially acceptable pastime: drinking. It doesn’t work. Lily stabs Stefan in the hand and snacks on the waiter. At least she apologizes about the mess he now has to clean up. Lily finds Bonnie and Jo at the diner and blames Bon Bon for ruining her life. Failing to hold Lily back, Bonnie gets silverware in her neck. Lily grabs Jo, but upon hearing she’s pregnant, lets her go. By the way, she’s having twins. Jo fears Kai and the coven will come after them, so Alaric suggests they get out of town after the wedding.
Elena and Damon discuss their favorite parts of being a vampire. She loves to heal people. He loves just about everything else. Damon shows her a vision of her old house where she takes the cure. The flood of memories coming back makes her a little light-headed. Eggplant parm. Their first date. The rain kiss. The necklace. Sneaking up, Lily snaps Damon’s neck. Now human Elena stabs Lily in the eye with her bachelorette party button and speeds out of there. She barricades herself in a storage closest and climbs out a vent, but Lily’s close behind.
The Salvatore brothers find Lily about to stab herself. Stefan begs her to stay alive for her sons, while Damon syringes her and locks her in their dungeon. Elena grows upset upon remembering that they already had a conversation about Damon taking the cure. She asked him to, but he couldn’t think of anything more miserable. Now she doesn’t want him to take it, but he says he does.
In the prison world, Kai calls his people into the house for a feast. It’s a big day; they’re going to get out of there.
- “I’d Leave My Happy Home For You” was an entertaining hour filled with more talk than action. Regardless, it took major strides toward amping up the tension for the season finale with a few game changers throughout the episode. While it wasn’t up to par with several of the recent episodes, it was solid, captivating, and accomplished its purpose.
- This episode demonstrated the wide spectrum of the show in a mere hour. On the one hand, Lily’s fight not to be a ripper showed the real, brutal danger that the characters face in their world. It encapsulated the supernatural-horror genre of the series in a succinct way. On the other hand, the amount of time that the characters spent talking about their feelings toward the cure and about their friends lying about having the cure reminded the audience that we’re still watching a teen soap. It’s impressive how well these two aspects of the series blend together.
- It’s somewhat surprising that Elena consumed the cure given all of the drama and threats surrounding it. Even though she has always wanted a normal life, she took the cure without any consideration for the danger she would be putting herself in and the potential side effects they’re unaware of. Plus, her love of Damon and the fact that she’s grown fonder of vampirism over the years should have made the decision to take the cure more difficult than the way it was presented.
- From the looks of things, it appears as if they are gearing up for a vampires and witches versus Kai and the heretics showdown. Rather than a bloodbath season finale, it would be more interesting and more suspenseful to see a game of wits and tricks.
- These were perhaps the saddest bachelor and bachelorette parties to ever happen in and around Mystic Falls. The guys at least had a whole host of people, but Elena and Bonnie barely tried to support a woman who has become invaluable in their lives and education.
- Twins. Of course Jo’s having twins. On a positive note, it creates more intriguing drama for her and Alaric to deal with. On a negative note, it may lead to them actually fleeing town. It’d be a shame to lose Alaric only one season after getting him back, and Jo has been a wonderfully refreshing addition to the series this season.
- Who’s in charge of the Gemini coven in Kai’s absence?
- Too bad Caroline fled town because a party would have been a perfectly organic way for the writers to include a karaoke bit instead of awkwardly having her sing at the school tavern for fun.
- It was nice to see Bonnie use her magic, even if it didn’t get her out of the dangerous situation. With all of the new witches introduced this season and last, it’s easy to forget that Bonnie was the original witch in the series. Here’s hoping they continue to rebuild her powers and place as a magical powerhouse.
- Considering how important the Gemini Coven is to the Parkers, it’s interesting that Bonnie and the Bennetts do not subscribe to this lifestyle. Perhaps Grams would have introduced Bonnie to a coven had she lived longer. Or perhaps Bonnie would rather fight her supernatural nature than embrace being part of the problem that plagues Mystic Falls. It would be great to see Bonnie bond with other witches who understand her particular struggles.
- “You are the last person who gets to criticize me for withholding information, my brother from the same mother.” – Damon (to Enzo)
