fans. But then, at the very last second, Sasha decided to
put a bullet into Father Gabriel’s brain. Bummer. We asked the woman who plays Sasha, Sonequa Martin-Green, about that pivotal moment when she stopped by
“People had had enough of Father Gabriel at that point,” says Martin-Green. “And I was moved when I first read this script that Maggie and Father Gabriel and Sasha come together in prayer, because I was not expecting that to be the end of a moment like that, being at the brink of murdering him. And ending in a prayer I thought was so well-written and so poignant. So I think that was a turning point for him as well.”
But how much of a turning point was it for Sasha? We saw her in the season premiere telling Abraham that she was no longer harboring a death wish. Has a definitive change happened in Sasha because of that mercy she showed Gabriel? “One-hundred percent a change has happened,” says Martin-Green. “As Sasha, I did not roll over and die. I refused to be consumed by it. And I was consumed for a long time. I was overrun by condemnation and guilt and couldn’t see past the next walker that I killed, because revenge was the only thing that made me feel like I could breathe.”
The Sasha we will see in season 6 is no longer dead inside and merely waiting to die on the outside as well, says Martin-Green. “I have realized that I was crazy, that I was acting like a crazy person,” she said. “The veil has been lifted. I’ve seen myself, and I realized that I should be ashamed for the way I behaved and I need to honor the ones that I’ve lost and actually try to live life they way they did instead of living it like some psychopath — psycopath against walkers, but still very unnatural and perverted behavior. I’ve seen the light, if you will. And I’m ready to honor Tyreese and honor Bob and serve this community.”
If they can keep the community of Alexandria together, that is. To hear Martin-Green’s thoughts on Sasha, listen below. And for more
