I think winx club tried to successfully tie back season 6 back to season 1 where bloom "loses" her power, also that once a fairy have reached a higher form they can't go back one transformation. It seems the dragon flame created hybrids of each power. I think that it was a little too under explained, I thought each fairy drew their power from a specific source.
