I was staying at Edward’s again. I hardly noticed. I just sat on his sofa and stared into space. He tried to engage me in conversations but I only nodded یا shook my head. He tried to cook me food but I کہا I wasn’t hungry. He sat اگلے to me and held my hand.
“Kayla,” he said. “Are آپ thirsty?”
I shook my head.
“Do آپ want to do something?”
I shook my head.
“Are آپ going to do anything?”
I shook my head.
He sighed.
I knew this frustrated him. He was worried سے طرف کی my constant staring into nothingness. I was barely thinking and hardly speaking. He had no way to know I was ok other than my breathing and the occasional time I blinked.
My phone vibrated in my pocket and it took me some time to realize that I had to answer it.
“Hello?” My voice sounded slightly depressed.
“Kayla?”
“Yes. Who’s this?” I asked. I was sure I knew the voice. I was rubbish at guessing who people were on the phone.
“It’s Jacob.”
“Jacob!” I practically squealed down the phone. Edward looked at me and I could see the annoyance in his eyes. He didn’t like it that it was Jacob who brought me out of my zombie-like state.
“Yeah,” Jacob said. “Glad to see آپ too. How are you?”
“I’m not so good,” I said, back to my depressive voice. “Charlie’s in hospital.”
“What happened?” Jacob’s voice was concerned.
“He fell in the باورچی خانے, باورچی خانہ and hit his head on the table,” I lied. “It’s pretty bad. He just had a fit.”
“Jesus,” Jacob breathed down the phone. “I’ll tell Billy. We might go up and see him.”
“Yeah,” I said, quietly. I wanted to go see him but Edward کہا I could go tomorrow. Carlisle still کہا he was out of it.
“Are آپ in the house alone?” Jacob asked. “Do آپ want me to come over?”
“No, I’m staying with the Cullens.”
“Is Charlie ok with that?”
“When I seen Charlie he was beaming with happiness. He wouldn’t care if I was shacking up with a polar bear.”
“I think آپ should stay with us.”
“Charlie is fine with it,” I assured Jacob. “Honestly. He thinks I’ve made a mistake and Edward and I will get bored of each other.”
“Here’s hoping,” Jacob muttered.
I heard a quiet snarl from Edward and I smiled. I guess he didn’t like Jacob that much.
“Jacob,” I said, sternly. “None of that.”
“Is he there?” there was a tone of disgust in his voice.
“It is his house,” I reminded him. “He would be here.”
“Is he there?” Jacob asked again.
“Yes,” I sighed.
“Right,” Jacob said.
“Jacob,” I said, tentatively. “I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“Nearly killing you. I feel really bad about it.”
“Don’t worry,” Jacob said, cheerfully. “I’m hard to get rid of, me.”
“Don’t I know it,” Edward muttered.
I slapped Edward’s arm, shushing him. He smiled devilishly at me.
“I think I should come over and see you,” Jacob said. He sounded worried for me.
“To the Cullens?” I looked at Edward. “Is that allowed?” I asked Edward.
Edward shrugged.
“Yeah.” Jacob answered.
“Uh...I don’t think that’s a good idea, Jay,” I said. “I mean, there are other vampires here, like Rosalie.”
Edward chuckled at that. Rosalie wasn’t the nicest Cullen and she could get pretty aggressive if Jacob just turned up. I hadn’t had an actual conversation with Rosalie for fear that she might bite.
“I’m not afraid of her,” Jacob said, defending himself.
“Yes, I know that,” I said, assuring him. “It’s just I don’t want a fight to break out.”
“Right,” Jacob said, but I knew he still thought I was calling him scared. “I better tell Billy.”
“Bye, Jay,” I said.
“See you, Kay.” Jacob hung up. I didn’t remove the phone from my ear. I just listened to the silence hoping that Edward might think that I was still having a conversation. But his super hearing heard the silence and pried the phone out of my hand.
“He’s gone,” Edward said, stating the obvious.
“Yeah, I know,” I said. “Can I have my phone back?”
He handed me the phone and I put it in my pocket.
“What do آپ English call a cell phone?” Edward asked me.
“A mobile,” I said. “You know, a phone that آپ can take with آپ anywhere. Mobile, get it?”
“Yes,” Edward said. “It makes sense.”
“Americans aren’t the only geniuses in the world,” I said. “We English sometimes make a breakthrough.”
Edward chuckled and held me close to him. He kissed the tip of my nose. He was trying to distract me. It was actually working. Whenever he held me, the feel of his cold arms around me always چرا لیا, چوری کی my attention. Whenever his lips touched my skin, my mind went blank and all I thought about was him.
But I would not let him distract me. Not now. He would not dazzle me.
He kissed my cheek and his lips caressed my neck. His lips left a cool tingling feeling on my skin.
“No,” I said. “You are not going to distract me.”
“I am not distracting you,” he answered. I felt his cool breath against my skin.
“You’re doing it now.”
“I am not.”
He was kissing my neck softly, making his way up to my jaw.
But I could stop him. No I couldn’t. I was powerless when it came to Edward’s kisses.
“Am I interrupting?”
Edward’s lips left my neck in a flash and I thought I heard him growl. It seemed he didn’t like to be interrupted.
Rosalie was standing at the door. There was a slight smirk on her lips. She knew she was interrupting.
“Yes, Rosalie?” Edward was annoyed. Very annoyed.
“There is a mutt at the downstairs,” Rosalie replied. “He won’t leave until he sees her.”
Rosalie pointed at me and then left.
“Jacob,” I said.
“Who else?” Edward muttered. “Let’s go see the dog.”
“Hey,” I said. “No name-calling.”
Edward didn’t answer but proceeded to drag me down the stairs and into the living-room where Jacob sat on the sofa, looking uncomfortable. Rosalie, Emmett and Esme were standing in a row watching him. Rosalie was looking at him with angry eyes, Emmett looked amused and Esme as usual was watching him with a caring look.
“I told آپ not to come,” I کہا when I saw him.
“I wanted to make sure آپ were ok,” he answered, standing up.
“I’m fine,” I replied, looking down.
Jacob walked closer to me and lifted my chin up to look in his eyes.
“Really?” he asked, softly.
“Yes,” I lied, but my eyes betrayed me and told him no. Jacob knew my eyes would tell him my real feelings. My eyes were never any good at lying. All he had to do was read my eyes and my secrets were out.
He shook his head.
“What?” I said.
“You are a rubbish liar,” he smiled. “What’s wrong?”
I looked around at the vampires in the room and wished that it was just me and Jacob. I would tell him every feeling I felt and everything that had happened. But it wasn’t just us. I wasn’t about to spill out my true feelings in front of everyone. Especially Rosalie.
“I’m just worried about Charlie,” I answered. “That’s all.”
“Yeah,” Jacob nodded. He knew I wasn’t telling him everything.
“Did آپ tell Billy?”
“Yeah, we’re going up to see him tomorrow.”
“That’s nice.” I said, nodding. Our conversation had run dry.
“Kayla,” Jacob said, seriously. “Call me, whenever آپ want to. I won’t ignore you. I’ll be here for you.”
I nodded. “I know that Jay.”
He nodded.
“I guess I’ll go.” He walked as fast he could out of the living room. I watched him go but I wanted to go after him. I glanced at Edward and he let my hand go. I ran after Jacob and caught him just as he walked down the steps.
“Jacob.” I grabbed his arm.
He turned around and looked at me questioningly.
“I’m here for آپ too, آپ know,” I said. “I won’t ignore you.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Just because my boyfriend’s a vampire does not mean I won’t make time for my بھیڑیا best friend.”
“Really?”
“Yes,” I said, sincerely. “I know I may not be like the Kayla آپ know but that’s just because I had to adapt. I’m still here آپ know. But she’s just for you.”
Jacob grinned at this. He loved the idea of have a Kayla just for him. He folded his big arms around me and crushed me to his warm chest.
“Jacob, I need to breathe!” I gasped.
“Sorry,” he said, sheepishly. “See you, Kayla.”
“Bye Jacob.”
