Five years. Mini-Mel and grown up Kenz. :3
Fin walked into the cave, defeated, the black and yellow of her cape ruffling out from behind her. Two. Two team members in one night. And that wasn’t even the worst of it. She ignored Nightwing’s pleading calls, Longshot’s silent mutters of “It wasn’t possible.” Not even Conner’s blind rage یا M’gann’s soft sobs could deter her. Not until she got to her room.
When she did manage to get there, the mask was off in an instant and Kenzie fell to her bed, silent tears beginning to stream down her face. She curled up, throwing off the دستانے, دستانہ on her left hand and fingering the small bracelet on her wrist. “Dammit, Mom. Why’d آپ have to go?”
“Who are آپ talking to?”
Kenzie jumped up and found herself face-to-face with a small, black haired toddler. “Oh, Mel...”
She couldn’t understand, she was just so tiny. A four-year old would never get the meaning of death... would she? “Where’s Aunt Nix?” piped the small child, tilting her head innocently.
Kenzie wiped her eyes and sat up. “She, um, had to go somewhere, Mel.”
“Where?” she asked again, bright eyed with confusion.
Kenzie glanced over to her nightstand where a picture sat. It was of her and a different Mel, back five years before any of this had happened. She was older then, if that had made any sense, because time travel was a very confusing thing. Kenzie didn’t have to wear sunglasses then, یا a mask, because she was too young to understand why she had to. Mel was happily laughing, while Kenzie had been sitting on the original Fin’s shoulders while the firecaster made a peace sign.
Looking back down at the smaller girl, Kenzie smiled as Mel curled up in her lap. “She was amazing, آپ know. آپ didn’t really know how amazing she was. I mean, آپ will know, but you’re too small now. She was the best, at everything I knew. Of course, آپ always think your mom is the best at everything. ‘Specially at this age.
“She was really good at flying, and her specialty was the bo staff, but she taught me how to use a sword just the same. She actually gave me this sword, آپ know. Enchanted it so it could hide in my بیلٹ, پٹی and only come out when I wanted it. She also taught me acrobatics and how to use my flexibility wisely.
“And when I was eight she promised I could شامل میں the team for real. There hadn’t been an Infinity in a couple of years. And because she was Phoenix, I was دیا the choice to keep my original name, Karma... یا carry on the ‘legacy,’ so to speak. I never knew that when I asked for the سیکنڈ choice, I’d be getting the full package.”
Melissa was asleep, but if Kenzie knew, she didn’t care. “She lost her parents around this age too. I never really had a dad, so that part was already out of the question. But I didn’t actually think she could die, آپ know?” She chuckled softly. “The force protected her, kept her alive. I didn’t think there was a to how many times she could actually come back. I hope.. I hope it protects me too, sometimes. It’ll be a price to pay.”
Glancing at the small bundle in her lap, Kenzie smiled again. “Thanks, Mel,” she whispered, and placed the girl on the bed.
Exiting the room, she walked down the hall slowly, passing the doors she felt like she’d done so many times. She muttered the names of the people who’d lived in them یا were going to live in them, then stopped in front of the one she was looking for. Sliding the door open carefully, she walked in and sat on the سونا comforter. It was a simple airbed. Nix hadn’t been one for luxury, even being the daughter یا a billionaire. Kenzie curled up in the blankets and inhaled. Burnt vanilla... she never knew how her mother had always managed to smell like that. Tears had returned, but she was content, and she fell asleep in her mother’s bed.
She’d see her tomorrow.
