I know not everyone celebrates Christmas, but in many countries, there is a big break coming up, and I thought I would share some good vacation-type reads. So put these on hold at the لائبریری now to prepare for a long period of time for relaxation and good reading.

1. His Dark Materials سے طرف کی Philip Pullman
(The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass)-I read this series once over a break and it is fantastic. Deep and meaningful while still a quick read. The 2nd one is my favorite.

2. Anna Karenina سے طرف کی Leo Tolstoy
This is probably a challenge for a lot of people, but it's one of the most amazing کتابیں I have ever read. I tackled this one over a Christmas break and finished in a little over a week. It's a good book to go for when آپ have a long stretch of time to devote to it.

3. Inheritance series سے طرف کی Christopher Paolini
(Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr) This is a good chance to catch up before the 4th book comes out. (Anyone know when that is, btw?) People may laugh at this pick, but the کتابیں are very easy reads and pretty addicting. You'll get into them quickly which is perfect for the holidays. آپ want to relax after all!

4. 1984 سے طرف کی George Orwell
If you've been putting it off, now's your chance to read this timeless classic!

5. Watership Down سے طرف کی Richard Adams
I know a book about rabbits on a quest sounds ridiculous but this book is completely wonderful. You'll get through it in no time.

6. Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales
This book looks intimidating, but each of the stories are very short and they are magical. آپ will love this. Plus, you've got time to kill ;)

7. Lord of the Rings سے طرف کی J.R.R. Tolkien
Now, I understand that this task is a little overwhelming, but at least try to finish one of these 3 کتابیں over break. I promise it's still good even if آپ spread it out. Tackle one this break, another in the spring and the last one over the summer.

8. The Girl of the Limberlost سے طرف کی Gene Stratton Porter
I completely loved this book when I was 15. It's a beautiful story. It has little to do with vacation, but it's a thick book, though a quick read once آپ get into it.

9. Birth of Venus سے طرف کی Sarah Dunant
If آپ like historical fiction, this one was very surprising to me in a good way. I usually don't go straight for the bestsellers, I'm مزید of a classics girl, but I'd say this is a good vacation book.

10. The Last Wife of Henry VIII سے طرف کی Carolly Erickson
Another historical fiction. I learned a lot about English history and about Henry VIII and his many wives. The کتابیں starts when he's still married to his first wife. I read this book literally from cover to cover without setting it down. A great fast read.

So there آپ have it. This is not a فہرست of my پسندیدہ کتابیں (though many do fit into that category) but instead a true فہرست of کتابیں I think آپ will find very enjoyable over vacation. So challenge yourself and read as many as possible یا even just one! Let me know what آپ think, I'd love to hear comments.

The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World سے طرف کی A.J. Jacobs
Just for the heck of it, one دن A.J. Jacobs decided to read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica, all thirty-two volumes. Surprisingly his details about his adventure is quite amusing and he does share some very interesting tidbits from the EB. یا as Jon Stewart says: "The Know-It-All is a hilarious book and quite impressive achievement. I've always said, why doesn't someone put out a less complete version of the encyclopedia? Well done, A.J."

I explained in my گزشتہ linkthe meaning of the this phrase, but here is a quick recap: advance readers' copies are sent pre-published کتابیں سے طرف کی publishers in hopes that a particularly enthusiastic recipient will personally promote the work to his یا her customers, and thus increase sales exponentially.

In A Sunburned Country, A Walk in the Woods and I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away سے طرف کی link
While I have only discovered Bill Bryson's works within the past year, I have whole-heartedly fallen in love with his writings. Why? Because they are the freaking funniest things I have ever read. He delights in depicting the strange and the awkward, which usually turns out to be him. This "God Dad! [teenage eyes rolling in disdain, can't believing that they are related]" theme runs throughout his books, adding *pop* and *crackle* to his extremely informative...

My Life in France سے طرف کی Julia Child with Alex Prud'homme
You must know Julia Child سے طرف کی name if not سے طرف کی reputation. The cook of all cooks. The woman who revolutionized American household kitchens; she entered the ہوم سے طرف کی TV and left us groaning, having just gorged on prodigious French food. But that really isn't her, Julia Child declares, in her book. My Life in France is an amazing, humanizing potrait of Julia Child as we peek into her life before fame and (can آپ belive it?) her life before she could cook (she claims that she was horrible in the باورچی خانے, باورچی خانہ before moving to France and attended cooking...
