I can't believe anyone would pick "he did it out of love". You don't abuse people you love.
His father abused him because he resented him. His wife cheated on him, and "his" child was smart enough to discover it on his own.
So may be part of him loved his son, but not enough. And that part had nothing to do with the abuse.

Seriously? In a society where parents are to afraid to "spank" their children, who's incredibly bad behaviour they then inflict on others, the question is "was it abuse!"

If the GOD given right of chastisement is considered ABUSE then what Colonel House did to Greg(ice bath, sleeping in the yard, no dinner if he was late to the table) should have had him charged with neglect, child endangerment and child abuse!!!

It was not the boys fault his mother was unfaithful. And considering the type of man Colonel House was portrayed as, her need for someone kind and gentle is not surprising.

Of course it's abuse! Along with making him sleep in the yard if he was late coming home and making him miss dinner if he was a minute late coming to the table. Yet, House said at his dad's funeral, "I am what I am because of him, for better or worse." What I want to know is, where was his mother during all of this? If I had been his mother I would have said to John House, "Greg really isn't yours ("Birthmarks") so I'm leaving you and taking Greg!"
