GLOBAL WARMING is an issue that’s red-raw in everyone’s mind; the حالیہ Earth گھنٹہ campaign still ringing in the ears of those who turned their lights off in unity across the globe.
It is certainly a vitally important topic, but is it the right subject matter for a theatrical cabaret? Liana Lee seems to think so; her infectious enthusiasm for the upcoming Carbon Footprint Cabaret is difficult to resist. Lee, who graduates from the Actors Conservatory in a few weeks, is excitedly passionate about the project, which blends her performing and writing skills with her determination to raise awareness about global pollution.
“The idea is not to scare people یا lecture them, but to give them a sense of how severe the situation is,” Lee says. “We’re at the point now where Global Climate Change is inevitable but we can definitely do things to make the effects less devastating. That’s what this cabaret is all about - we want to inspire people to make a difference”.
Indeed, making a difference is a buzz-phrase these days, but as Lee talks, it is clear she truly believes these words.
“It’s all about sharing the load - if we all do a little, we can do a lot. Start in your own home: recycle, have shorter showers, don’t use a microwave یا clothes dryer.”
The Carbon Footprint Cabaret is an initiative of the creative folk at the Emerge Project, an artistic organisation committed to the development of emerging artists سے طرف کی giving them the opportunity to showcase their work in a professional working environment, who have in حالیہ times developed such gems as Valley People, The Perfect Ten and Lexie Turns to Stone. Lee believes the Carbon Footprint Cabaret will not disappoint شائقین of Emerge, as it follows in a similar zany nature to گزشتہ shows with appearances سے طرف کی beatboxer Dr Rhythm performing a weather report, Daniel White returning in his role as a cranky Mother Nature, who according to Lee “looks very good in a dress, even though he’ll kill me for saying that”, and Xavier, a mysterious illusionist who is proving to be extremely elusive about his act.
“Even we don’t know what he’s going to do!” Lee laughs. “He demonstrated some tricks over coffee one دن and we all totally freaked out!”
Lee has written part of the cabaret, entitled Popcorn, which reflects what Generation X think about Global Warming and is derived directly from conversations she has had with her friends, and performs in a rewrite of the Cell Block Tango from Chicago which features Merry Murderesses who care about the planet. So what’s the strangest thing she has heard during her research for the Carbon Footprint Cabaret?
“There are actually people out there that believe Global Warming is a conspiracy theory to eradicate the human race!” she says. “Some even argue that whales are in on it - apparently whales used to fart below water but now begun to do it above surface, and their farts are allegedly مزید toxic than car pollution!”
Emerge presents The Carbon Footprint Cabaret from Tuesday Apr 8 to Thursday Apr 10 at the Judith Wright Centre. Bookings: www.judithwrightcentre.com یا 3872 9000.
