Dickie Arbiter, former press officer for the Royal couple, has given his version of events on the much-discussed moment in his new book \'On Duty With The Queen: My Time as a Buckingham Palace Press Officer\'.

In 1992, as rumours circulated about the poor state of their relationship, the pair were on a tour of India but were kept busy with conflicting schedules and engagements.

With Prince Charles attending business meetings, Diana was left to attend the Taj Mahal alone and, unimpressed, she apparently decided to exact her revenge on her husband at a Valentine\'s Day polo match.

The Princess was due to hand out prizes at the match, in which the next-in-line to the throne was playing.

Furious at being left alone, she initially refused to do so but was reportedly persuaded to continue by Mr Arbiter and another press officer.

It was the final straw when Charles forgot to kiss her in front of waiting media.

Mr Arbiter said: “Realising his mistake, he hastily returned and, with an uncertain crowd looking on, moved to kiss his wife’s cheek. Incensed, the Princess swivelled her head so that the kiss landed near her ear.

“The crowd, as well as those of us accompanying the royal couple, could only cringe.

“The Prince had clearly been intentionally humiliated, and we knew he’d be furious.”

In the wake of the publication of Mr Arbiter\'s book, Buckingham Palace has demanded a crackdown on the publication of such tell-all books.

Senior royals have demanded that lawyers tighten up employment contracts to avoid intimate Royal secrets being revealed, the Sunday Mirror reported today.

A source told them: "It has been made clear that this will be the last time the Royal Family will be made to endure such public humiliation."
