“Seeker, use a blade to cut open his شرٹ, قمیض and collar,” Dr. Xian ordered. Declan cut Alek’s شرٹ, قمیض open, revealing a plain view to the bulging green veins around his heart.
“Woah, green? I thought he was team blue now!”
“What’s happening to him?” Nic demanded.
“His body’s rejecting the excessive Reverse he’s been taking. That’s also why the energy is green rather than blue.”
“Wait,” the fire-boy rounded on the doctor. “You knew Alek’s been stealing from the lab?”
“Of course, Blaze, I do take notice when medicines disappear from my offices.” Alek’s breathing was finally less ragged, if heavy. “Lay him gently on his back again.”
Emily and Declan did as instructed while the doctor turned to the 12-year-old watching wide eyed from the foot of the cot. “Ivy, darling, I need آپ to watch Ti’s aura and keep an eye on young Weston’s vitals. If either become critical, alert me immediately.”
Ivara nodded, switching her vision to her سیکنڈ sight.
“Why did آپ not inform me of the misdemeanors?” Nic continued, “Did آپ even confront him yourself?”
The doctor nodded to himself, taking PlastiCuffs from the medicine cabinet. He handed one to Emily across the بستر and motioned for her to follow his example of securing Alek’s wrists to the frame of the cot.
“Remove his boots and socks, Blaze.” The doctor searched through the cabinet as the fire-caster moved to the end of the bed. “I am a doctor. When Alek reborn as Titanium, and he was not strong enough to contain his powers, it was duty to give him spemthing to ease the pain and stress. The Reverse was meant to help him stay in control until he adjusted.”
“But آپ knew it was too much.” Blaze stuffed the socks in the boots, then laid the shoes on the floor just under the cot, out of the way. “And آپ made no effort to stop him.”
Dr. Xian accepted the IV which Emily, سے طرف کی now familiar with the equipment after the time she had spent helping take care of Aryess, had setup. The scientist adjusted the needles, sliding two into the vulnerable underside of Alek’s exposed forearm. Using a syringe, he injected sedatives into the tubing. “A دل monitor would be unnecessary as Alek’s دل rate is not of natural standards.”
“Why do we have to secure him?” Declan asked as he slid a PlastiCuff around the boy’s ankles.
“To keep him from hurting himself, یا any of us. His body’s natural defenses are working to exterminate the Reverse from his system. It will not be painless.” Eliot slid his glasses further up his nose. “The morphine will be effective for a short period of time, only long enough for him to stabilize. Then we will have to hope for the best.”
“The best?” Emily gave him an anxious look. “What do آپ mean? Is he...” Her distressed expression turned to one of fear before she managed to force the words out, “Could Alek die?”
Eliot evaded the question, which only confirmed it. “Use the water and wash clothes to keep the patient as cool as آپ can. I will check back up on him regularly, but someone should stay سے طرف کی his side at all times, but not مزید than one یا two in the room at a time, as both he and Ms. Weston need their space.” He gave the unconciouse boy one last fleeting glance, then turned to leave.
Nic caught up to the doctor as they reached the hall.
“You didn’t try to stop him,” Nic confronted.
“You seem to have made up your mind on the subject, Blaze.” Eliot turned down the corridor and reached his room, but Nic stepped between him and the door. The man raised an eyebrow at the younger boy.
“You are indeed a doctor, Xian. But آپ are also a scientist. I know your kind. آپ are curious of the world and, مزید intamentaly, its anomalies,” Nic drilled his deep navy eyes into the man’s. “My team is not for آپ to expiriment on. آپ are here because آپ owe Daemian, and because آپ seek refuge. That is all. If آپ ever put another one of my team in danger for curiousity’s sake, I will see that آپ are removed from the premises, and perhaps make your vulnerability known to some of those people آپ don’t want knowing. Am I making myself clear?”
Eliot nodded once. “Absolutely. It will not happen again, sir.”
“Good.” Nic stepped out of the way, then marched back toward his team to put things back in order.
