It was called Guardians of the Galaxy Reviews - Metacritic
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.… Expand
Surrender, earthlings. It’s the Guardians’ world and you’ll be happy to live in it.
The film\'s a giddily subversive space opera that runs on self-aware smart-assery.
Gunn makes this huge entertainment accessible to the converted and the neophyte alike, and he has only has one goal: To send you out of the theater with a fat smile on your face. Mission accomplished.
Laugh-out-loud funny and production-designed to death, Guardians of the Galaxy pops off the screen.
The gadgetry and fight scenes are nicely rendered. The aeronautical battles, though, fall well short of state-of-the-art. Maybe they\'re collateral damage to the film\'s goofy style.
The motley crew’s repartee makes for comedy that’s surprisingly consistent, yet freewheeling and sharp enough to pinball from Kevin Bacon to Jackson Pollock and back.
Guardians of the Galaxy brings to mind some of the most unforgettable sci-fi event movies of the last 30 years. Alas, those films are “Howard the Duck” and “Green Lantern.”
Highly recommend. Definitely the funniest marvel movie I\'ve seen so far, though very different than what they\'ve been doing. It\'s an ensemble sci-fi adventure comedy with clever dialogue and a memorable cast of characters. Similar group dynamic to what we saw in the avengers, made all the more impressive by the fact that they haven\'t had several movies to introduce the characters.
It has very little to do with the avengers specifically and instead widens the lens to encompass the greater marvel universe, making use of characters and alien races we\'ve seen bits and pieces of before (most notably in the Thor films). The tone is very unique, bouncing effortlessly back and forth between comedy and genuine drama with an array of action scenes in a wide variety of set pieces.
If you\'ve been following the marvel movies so far, you\'ll want to see this since it helps to expand the cinematic universe while setting the stage for the future avengers films (though in some ways it feels like it\'s setting up Avengers 3 more than 2). On the other hand, if you haven\'t been following the franchise very consistently or not at all, it still works as an adventure movie. The main characters have little or nothing to do with any of the movies so far, and while there are one or two faces we\'ve seen before, especially in the villain department, you won\'t need to know them to be able to enjoy it. There\'s an important macguffin that ties into the larger story, but it\'s basically just there to drive the plot along. If anyone has been living in a cave somewhere for the past ten years or so, I\'d be interested to hear what someone who hasn\'t watched any of the marvel movies thought of this.… Expand
This movie is awesome in every way. I perfectly blends everything you love about Sci-Fi and add its own Marvel twist. The acting is fantastic, with Bradly Cooper and Chris Pratt stealing the show as Rocket and Star Lord. Vin Diesel as Groot is great and lends a lot of humor to the movie. Zoe Saldana is great as Gamora, making the character so interesting, that I wanted to know more. The real surprise is Dave Bautista as Drax. For this being his first movie since leaving the WWE, he does a pretty good job and has a few good jokes on his own. The humor in the movie is great, easily making it Marvel\'s funniest movie to date. Most, if not all, the jokes hit the mark and are clever. The action is top-notch and what we have come to expect from Marvel movies. I\'ve seen some reviewers complain how Ronan isn\'t very interesting, and I don\'t really agree. Ronan is very menacing and Karen Gillan as Nebula, his henchmen, adds to his awesomeness. Overall, the movie is one of, if not the best summer blockbusters this year and definitely on my top 10. The hardest question I had to ask myself was whether I liked this or Captain America more. :) BTW Make sure to stay for the end-credits scene, it\'s a funny surprise!… Expand
This movie was straight-up awesome. It knew that it couldn\'t take itself too seriously, and thus it was able to shine. It was definitely a different direction for Marvel take, and a big risk, but it paid off. Hands-down, one of the funniest movies I\'ve ever seen. Oh, and the action was thrilling as well. That\'s always a plus.… Expand
Wow, terrific. Have seen it twice and laughed as much both times. Highly recommended. It was a great blend of the typical marvel storyline with clears ties to the past and future and humor. The cast plays well together (although the literal guy is underwhelming). I was very touched by their bonding.… Expand
I have seen it 3x thus far. It is one of the best Marvel films so far. Great casting and great epic story. It reminded me of a nice mix of Avengers and Star Wars (original three) with a little space magic thrown in. Go see it now.… Expand
"Guardians Of The Galaxy" is yet another winner for Marvel/Disney that features miraculous camera work, blistering humor, fantastic character work, and even a few unexpected kernels of heart littered throughout.… Expand
Shoots low ... and hits it\'s mark. Yet another Marvel comic book falls off the conveyor belt.
This is the substance of modern American film making - a horrific piece of formula garbage.
But they just keep shoveling it out - and people keep throwing money at them. Sad.… Expand
