Usually people fall for anime character beacuse they have the personality/looks traites they like, So it's only understandable. When a person falls for an Anime character, it's nothing all that dramatic, right? Nothing special. So when does this thing become dangerous? When that same one person is unable to segregate fantasy from reality. When that person dedicates his life to that character, ignoring his "real" life completely.
