WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE
I love Ariel to death-she is like a lot of girls who want more in life, and she's a quirky girl who is determined to do it. Though she is flawed, being spoiled and getting what she wants in the end without suffering for it much (but hey, don't we all have flaws? So I deal with it), she is a great character I won't forget. However, Merida is a strong protagonist with skills in archery and a fiery attitude to match her wild mane. Plus, I swear, our hair is a lot alike-you know when her mother tried to put away that tiny little strand during the archery thing in the beginning. That's EXACTLY how my mom is with my hair and my bangs-I have bangs just like hers. But that's not why I like her, really, I got off topic, haha. Anyway, she makes a great hero and even a role model. She's Pixar's first major female protagonist, adn I'm happy with what they gave us. :)
1) Brave movie flopped. When I went to see it, people started booing when Merida's mom turned into a bear because it was so lame and predictable. The theater gave hundreds of dollars back to their customers. The Litttle Mermaid is more liked.
2) ARIEL IS DAMN HOT AND BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Merida copied Ariel by being a redhead. Merida is the ugliest Disney girl I've ever seen. I hate her hair, freckles, the shape of her head......EVERYTHING!!!
3) Ariel is an Official Disney Princess while Merida is not going to be one.
4) Have you noticed Merida is the only "princess" who doesn't have an official song shes sings, in fact, she doesn't sing at all.
5) Brave basically copied The Little Mermaid. Merida disobeys her parent and runs away to change her fate by dealing with a witch. So Brave is basically a different version of The Little Mermaid.
6) Merida doesn't have a prince.
Any ways, I love Merida. I think she is lovely. She has a realistic body, with gorgeous hair and eyes. She's one of the few heroine's I've seen that has similar facial proportions to me and my best friend. I relate to her a lot more than any other heroine except Alice in Wonderland, and I see a lot of strength and spunk in her. The opposition with her mother was very realistic, and I loved seeing the contrast between the wild Merida and her more proper mother. Yes, Ariel is beautiful. But she's unrealistic, and I hate her body. She's way too thin. Her hair overpowers her, even though it is lovely. Also, the freckles thing is very realistic, redheads always have freckles.
I love that Merida didn't sing, it differed her from the "Disney Girls" since she IS a PIXAR princess. They're two different animation studios. I like that she doesn't have a prince, it's refreshing since a lot of people complain about the who true love thing.
I admire Merida's story. She learned real lessons and paid for her actions with her own guilt and fear, unlike Ariel, who never learned a lesson or seemed to feel guilt or shame until her father found out. I found the story of a Scottish princess trying to get out of marriage more exciting than a mermaid trying to win the heart of the hot prince. Merida is admirable because she is more realistic and compatible to the teens of today, the smart ones who wait for love and have ambition. The one's who fight with their parents simply because they want to find their own way in life. Ariel reflected more of the teens of the 90's.
Also, if you want to play the simplification game of the plot, The Little Mermaid is about a girl who disobeyed her parents and put lots of people in danger just to get the guy her parents didn't like, in the end never learning to suffer the consequence.
Brave is about a girl who disobeyed her parents and put a lot of people in danger to get out of a young marriage and make her mother see more eye-to-eye in the process, in the end suffering for her mistake and learning a lesson that changes her.
The last thing I love about Merida is I had a real emotional connection with her character, which I never did with Ariel. Her movie made me laugh, it made me cry. Like other Pixar films, it made me have an emotional investment with the heroine, while Ariel's movie was just entertainment, even as a kid.
So, that is my very jumbled list of reasons. Merida wins in my books.
Ps - Scottish accent. Enough said.
Ariel is one of my all-time favorites, and my favorite Disney princess (as well as the one most like me) 'til Merida came galloping along. Not that Merida's part of the official lineup, but she's still technically a princess from a Disney (and Pixar) film, so...:P I adore the hell out of and relate strongly to both of them. They're both gorgeous and interesting, imperfect, but admirable characters. I'll always love my Ariel to death, but I'm on a total Merida high. She and I are virtually twins. It's ridiculous. I've received so many comments about it, and even if we looked nothing alike, I would have still felt a firm bond with her due to the movie itself.
I like Ariel, but I never found her to be high on my list of characters.
Both girls are absolutely completely gorgeous, spirited, BRAVE, strong characters and females/heroines. There are definitely similar elements in the plots, and Brave is sort of an original fairy tale...but most of these types of stories deal with related issues and character types. You can't really make anything entirely original and different anymore, so as long as it's not a total rip-off, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being inspired or influenced by other things. In fact, that's wonderful. Same with the fact that they're redheads...oh yes, Merida totally copied Ariel by having similar hair. And Rapunzel copied Aurora, Cinderella, Barbie, and every other blonde character....xDDD
That said, Merida would make an incredible mermaid. *u* Brave was a great success, as it well deserves to be; I haven't talked to a single person who didn't love it. As the first Pixar princess, it's not surprising that they haven't added Merida to the "official lineup"--which now has an even ten--even though she would of course be more than worthy enough. It's all right. Disney has certainly celebrated her sufficiently so far. I AM waiting for the first Pixar musical (and now that they have a princess, can a musical be that far off?) Had Brave been one, you can bet Merida would have had at least one show-stopping musical number...maybe even a duet with Elinor or something.
And the fact that she doesn't have a prince is a PLUS as far as I'm concerned. (Heck, a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle...and Ariel didn't need no bicycle under the sea! ;)
IT is nice and messy!!! It looks BRAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
