Plus there is a radiation band between the moon and earth, most metals that would be able to go through that without the astronauts being exposed would be far too heavy to fly into space. Getting to the moon was well beyond the scientific capabilitys of 1969.

^^ you guys do know that with our satellite tec of today we can actually zoom in on the surface of the moon and see the original spaceship from 1969 still sitting there.
