Chapter Two: Goddaughter
~In school~
Eli was keeping Ayla away from the people as best as he could. I was walking toward Adam’s locker. He was standing there as usual, listening to my آئی پوڈ, ipod I had lent him. He was jamming because I could hear it. “HEY!” he yelled over the music. Then he spotted Eli. “Yo, man!” Then he spotted Ayla and ripped out the earphones. “What’s Ayla doing?!?” “Theresa cancelled. Can آپ please, baby-sit?” I said. He shook his head and held Ayla. “I’m sorry; I have a HUGE English test today.” “Dang. Now what? I have to enroll first…what do we do?” “I guess we can make up an excuse to Simpson.” “Like what?” I started. “Tell them we’re babysitting some random kid; یا something like this: ‘this is our kid; I carried it for 8 and a half months so I could bring it to school?’” “No, I don’t want anybody to know I have a kid, Clare! I’m Eli Goldsworthy for god’s sake: My father passed out when I told him!” “I know. I was there making sure he didn’t flip and مککا, عجیب الخلقت something-you.” He snickered and took Ayla from Adam; she was getting fussy. Ayla reached for me; Eli sighed and handed her over. She gooed and then clutched onto my blue and green پھول blouse. I swayed with her in my arms and started walking back down the hallway.
~Into the principal’s office~
“Mr. Simpson.” Eli knocked on the door. Mr. Simpson looked up. “Hello, Eli-are آپ back?” Eli nodded, and waved to me, “And Clare.” Mr. Simpson grimaced. I was the one who had put off the stink bomb. It was his worst nightmare. And then after break they had uniforms. I was still there. And then they took them away-a week after that I told Eli I was pregnant and we headed off to “boarding school”. Nine months later, ‘boom’, we had a baby. “And…a baby?” he said. “Whose kid is this?” “It’s o-“I started; but Eli stopped me. “It’s my goddaughter.” “Why is she here?” he asked. “ELI!!” I کہا loudly. Ayla yawned; I caressed her chin. She leaned her head on my shoulder. Eli looked pained whenever he looked over at me. “Are آپ sure she’s your ‘goddaughter’?” Simpson asked. “Um…y-“Eli said. I had to interrupt him. This was our DAUGHTER he was talking about. “I can’t be around آپ right now, Eli.” I کہا and simply walked out with Ayla.
Down the hall, I heard nasty laughs as I walked down the hall with a sleepy Ayla. I was almost out the door-but I felt someone clutch my shoulder. I whipped around holding the babies chin. It was Fitz. I cringed. He’d stabbed Eli. I didn’t want him near my baby. I backed up. “Is this yours?” he asked and touched Ayla’s cheek. I lifted my lips. “Yes, and don’t touch her.” “I’ll touch her if I want.” “No, آپ won’t.” I کہا and backed up against the wall. I slammed with Ayla tighter than tight. Ayla was now waking up. He caressed my face.
