It's always something that bothered me for some reason; in fact, I think it's kind of sexist. With Belle and the Beast, Aladdin and Jasmine, Pocahontas and John, and to an extent Tiana and Naveen, Rapunzel and Eugene and Anna and Kristoff. The guy is never as moral as the girl, they're less "nice", have more lessons to learn and screw up more.

Mostly. It bothers me a ton because it encourages the continuity of double standards where its expected for a girl to be pure and if she's not, it's taboo.

^Exactly my problem. It's both misongynistic (women have to be pure and righteous) and misandristic (men aren't as moral or good as women).

Sorry I spelled "Disney" wrong.

Boys are watching these movies, too, and need positive role models just as much as girls.

I agree with magnollainmay and uploaded900. That's why I want a DP who has to learn a lesson from her prince, like Megara and Hercules!

Which is one of the reasons Tiana gets on my nerves so much.... She's practically mean, while teaching Naveen how to "shape up." Belle is a little less aggravating than Tiana. Like Tiana does with Naveen, and Rapunzel with Eugene, and Pocahontas with John. I also like Mulan, because she is the other way around. Mulan learns warrior skills from her "prince."

I love Megara and Hercules, because both are equals--- both make mistakes during the movie, and both learn from one another.

^Tiana still had to learn to relax and have fun from a Naveen, at least. Belle didn't have to learn anything from anyone because she was already better than everybody else in her movie.

I agree with what you said about Ariel and Mulan though, although Mulan did teach Shang in some ways. He was slightly misongynistic in the beginning, but by the end he treats her as an equal, admires and respects her.

They should be portrayed as equals.

I should probably care about this more, but.. I never took much notice until you brought this up; it didn't bother me then or now.

I agree that boys need more role models. And I'm tired of seeing it everywhere, but I also don't think it's so bad because mostly, that's how some situations are in real life. Just like the boy being stronger than the girl is most common, but that doesn't mean it can't be the other way around. I would like more of a mix, but just like in the other situation I don't think it's sexist.

Some of them? No. What does that really hurt? Historically men have been portrayed as morally superior for centuries, and still are in mainstream films and video games and the superhero genre. Now people are crying "Discrimination against men!" when Disney creates a FEW role models for girls?

I'd only be bothered by it if it was most or all of them, which it isn't.

To me it's putting higher expectations on women than on men.
It's the reason Belle and Beast and Mulan and Shang are my bottom 2 in my favorite couples list. To me Mulan is morally superior to Shang. She is much more corageous and progressive than him.
