Game of Thrones at the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards 

It’s that time of year again, when

cast members get dolled up in their best and head to Los Angeles to represent the show at the Emmy Awards.

has already won four Emmys so far this year, at the Creative Arts ceremony held on August 16

, taking home awards for costuming, art direction, special and visual effects, and prosthetic makeup.

Tonight, they’ll be competing in five major categories:

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – Peter Dinklage,

the award goes to Aaron Paul of “Breaking Bad”

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – Lena Headey,

the award goes to Anna Gunn of “Breaking Bad”

Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series – “The Children,” by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss,

the award goes to “Breaking Bad” for the episode “Ozymandias,” written by Moira Walley-Beckett.

Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series- “The Watchers on the Wall,” directed by Neil Marshall,

the award goes to Cary Joji Fukunaga, for “True Detective”

The awards started fifteen minutes ago. They haven’t announced any GOT categories yet. They usually last a few hours long. We’ll update the post with wins/losses as it goes.

Really hope GOT gets some proper recognition.

I doubt GoT will pick up any of the five awards its up for tonight, and most seem to agree with me. However, D&D’s confidence that each season of GoT will get progressively better has assuaged my fears a little that this was GoT’s last big chance to win major Emmys–I think we’ll eventually get there, maybe next year. Lena Headey’s nom, for instance, could be prep for a more likely win next year, when she should have a pretty juicy role.

If there was EVER a season that Dinklage deserved to win, though, it’s Season 4.

It was sort of politics that even got him nominated in Season 3: he was good with what material he was given, but Tyrion simply isn’t in the first half of book 3 that much – neither is Cersei, really. Then the action shifts to them later.

Doesnt look too good so far. Same people as last year (dreyfus, parsons) won again. If that’s anything to go by Breaking Bad will just sweep it. Peter is the only one with a chance i’d say.

Yeah– the Emmys have been really stagnant- and with Breaking Bad making it’s last showing, I’d say they’re almost a lock (though True Detective might give them a run).

Peter has an OK shot, and I’ll give Neil Marshall a shot for Watchers… otherwise I think we’re a little outgunned.

Peter had to go up against Aaron Paul’s performance in the Confessions episode (at least, I’d be surprised if that’s not the one they submitted). As much as we’d love for Peter to win, it’s hard to say Paul isn’t deserving.

Jessie didn’t do shit in the final season. This means Breaking Bad will win everything, which is okay. Game Of Thrones should have won for it’s first season. Probably nevet will now.

He had a couple of good scenes, and my understanding is the vote is based on a single episode, not the whole season. But yeah the best overall performers on BB this year were Cranston and Gunn, with Dean Norris having some great moments as well.

Though it may be possible that some voters picked Paul again without even watching any of the nominated episodes, just using the “it’s Breaking Bad’s year” logic.

If it was based on one episode Peter should have won all the more. How can that speech not win?! Aaron Paul didnt do something of that level this season. It’s more likely the Emmy voters are creatures of habit and just gave it to him again. Last year the guy from Boardwalk won though right? didnt see that coming. It will be tough with Peters’ new non KL arch. As said Lena is the best bet for next season based on the material.

Hard to disagree with Aaron Paul winning. Emmys have always been more of a long-term achievement award, if they are an achievement award at all, and Paul winning for his work on Breaking Bad is 10,000x better than watching Jim Parsons win again.

Massive Breaking Bad fan – I think it’s better than Game of Thrones, but come on. Jesse’s scenes in the final season weren’t that great. It was kind of a repetition of the range he’d already shown. The writing for his particular scenes wasn’t especially great either. Dinklage deserved that one.

Even without Breaking Bad, you have True Detective who will likely be the big winner in the years to come, and they’ll likely reward Mad Men in some way next year with this being their last season.

The treatment of GOT is reminding me more and more of how the Academy treated Star Wars back in the 70s and 80s. The first was given a nod, and then they were blatantly ignored from then on because they were ‘sci-fi/space fantasy’ and therefore not to be taken seriously. With Star Wars, you can at least overlook it because they were intended as children’s films, but with GOT? You can’t say that lol It’s for adults, but because it is fantasy, it’s not going to be taken as seriously as everything else.

Ultimately, this is the failing of the Emmys, not of GOT or its cast and crew.

I wonder about this too. I loved td but I can’t help think it’s lightning in a bottle. It’s a whole different animal for the writer to put out similar quality in a much shorter time period.

I felt like that was the one award True Detective deserved. Marshall did a great with his one episode, but Fukunaga directed all of the TD episodes, and did a really phenomenal job.

It’s a bust again. Peter was the one who really deserved it. Neil Marshall could easily have won too. The other 3 arent / werent expected.

Best Drama seems like an obvious choice for Breaking Bad. True Detective is an outside chance but no way Game of Thrones will win (or any of the others really)

To be honest I kind of want Breaking Bad to win Best Drama, because I think it deserves it, and it is its last hurrah. If Paul and Gunn can win in their categories, then Cranston deserves to too.

Gunn’s performance in the final season was amazing. She had “Ozymandias”, the best work she’s done to date, between her scenes with Marie, and her realizing that Walt has killed Hank and then kidnapped Holly.

You argument hinges on the idea that GOT is clearly better than those other shows and is only losing because of bias, which is rather dubious. “Breaking Bad” was better than GOT last year, in the eyes of quite a few people, myself included. So was “Mad Men”, among others.

I love Breaking Bad also, but I prefer GOT in all fields. Does it mean I think it should win every award? Of course not, but neither do I think it should be blatantly ignored either. It is often awarded a token crumb or two, but those are almost insulting. It’s a common technique for award shows to do with popular shows, so they don’t look completely out of touch.

Disagree. Sure. It’s an anthology. But an anthology’s really just a collection of short stories with an overarching motif. True Detective, likewise, is a collection of miniseries’. Most of the people who worked on the first series will not be returning for the second. It was, in itself, a miniseries.

Breaking Bad won everything it was nominated for: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Episode Writing….and now, Best Series.

The only things it *didn’t* win which it was nominated for was Best Direction for an episode (which went to True Detective).

The Good Wife won Best Actress because Breaking Bad wasn’t nominated.

I love love love LOVE Lena, and I can’t see my way to her beating Anna Gunn for her amazing work in Ozymandias, and for me it’s another way to stick it to all the Skyler White haters who get on her for being an “impediment” to Walter White’s “badassery.” And Cranston deserved it too, as does the series and the writing.

I did think Dinklage was more deserving, though. But he *does* have one, so there is that already.

I think GoT’s time will come as well, and agree with those who believe it will likely be honored in a ‘Return of the King’ style fashion where it garners an award that acknowledges its scope as a long-running fantasy series that hasn’t been put together on such a scale in history.

It’s bizarre how people have so thoroughly accepted Ryan Murphy’s transparent bid to make his ongoing series eligible for more awards (and it was an ongoing series at first; he only decided to jettison the original characters/situation when it became clear he’d written himself into a corner) that they accuse drama series that don’t also apply for the exemption to be committing category fraud.

To recap, the four awards that Game of Thrones actually managed to win, at the Creative Arts Emmys, were:

(Michele Clapton was nominated for Costumes in all four past seasons, of which she won for Season 2).

The series also won a Hugo Award last week at WorldCon – it has won a Hugo Award every year since it began (well, “Season 1″ as a whole won for “Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form”, but then they shifted categories to “Short Form”, individual episodes (probably a – successful – plan to maximize their chances of winning). Subsequently, “Blackwater” won for Season 2, and Season 3′s “The Rains of Castamere” won just last week.

Aarrrghhh!! I really liked Breaking Bad, it’s my favourite show next to GoT. I thought season 4 was amazing, but BB season 5 sucked, the ending was terrible, the pace changes too weird… They really wanted to end the show in that season. Compared to GoT’s Season 4 with so many epic moments, plots and acting, never the less I was kind of expecting this… Emmys and Golden Globes always give accolades to the same dudes. The Old Christine chick, Jim Parsons and the entire modern family crew have an entire room to throw accolades. So does Aaron Paul and Bryan.

Right. American Horror Story is exactly why i figured it could be entered as one. It even has only 8 episodes right? And as said by nature it is a series of mini-series with new casts. It did pay off though it might likely have taken it from Neil Marshall?

I correctly guesssed them all right as the nominees were read out so voters really are creatures of habit. Its a pity Breaking Bad didnt finish last year or we might have won a couple. they will have to step it up next year to get nominated again at all (for the big categories. Only Lena seems a lock)

Prediction for next year: After Sunday’s episode of HBO’s “The Leftovers,” I believe it will be a major contender at next year’s Emmys. The last scene was gut-wrenching.

HBO has to regret entering True Detective against Breaking Bad instead of as a mini-series. I’d say it lost out on at least 2 awards because of it. The Emmys were once again predictable. Someone tell me why Modern Family keeps winning, please? Breaking Bad at least deserved most of their awards. Jon Hamm better get the career achievement best actor award next year.

I love Game of Thrones, but I have zero issue with Breaking Bad beating them. Breaking Bad IS better in almost every field. Acting, and writing especially. Benioff and Weiss are not as good as Gilligan and his team, and not as good as Martin either, but that’s another story and I’ll leave it there.

Aaron Paul wasn’t better than Dinklage this year. And I say that as someone who felt BB deserved to win for everything else.

This was Breaking Bad’s night, plain and simple. It won everything that it was nominated for with the exception of Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series, which went to Cary Fukunaga from True Detective in a race that was locked up as soon as the episode featuring the six-minute long tracking shot aired. When Bryan Cranston is taking down Matthew McConaughey (not that he isn’t deserving – his performance in “Ozymandias” and throughout the series was one for the ages), then nothing else stands a chance. It’s an all-time great series that had what many people thought (including me, I should add) was an all-time great final season. I would have liked to see the wealth spread out a bit more, but I’m not unhappy with these results.

It’s a disappointing night for Game of Thrones, especially because I do believe that Season 4 was the best overall season of the show. But while I was hoping that Peter Dinklage or Neil Marshall might be able to score a surprise win, they weren’t favored in any race, and this was always the most likely scenario. Lena Headey should have her best shot next year (and win or lose, she remains The Queen of Everything – an indisputable truth that I don’t state often enough).

I remain optimistic that Game of Thrones will take the big prize at some point before its run ends. It may wind up being a Lord of the Rings-type situation where they award it for the final seasons as a celebration of the series as a whole, but stands a good chance, especially with Breaking Bad over, True Detective a question mark going forward, and Mad Men clearly in its twilight. People love to talk about the anti-fantasy bias in the Academy, but they wouldn’t award it 15-20 nominations every year if there wasn’t a significant amount of support for the show. And even without such validation from the Academy, Game of Thrones remains one of the very best shows on TV, and an amazing accomplishment for everyone involved.

I think you’re giving too little credit to Benioff and Weiss. Gilligan & co. didn’t have to work with so many characters and locations, adapting the mammoth-sized books and now having to work without source material.

I do agree that Breaking Bad deserved the awards, though.

Yes Breaking bad is great, but I don’t get the idolisation of it all. It’s certainly not ”the best show ever”. Rant over.

I agree. I enjoy GoT more, and Breaking Bad is a great show, but not my #1 (and probably not in my Top 5).

But that said, it’s still a worthy winner, with great acting, great writing and a great end to the series — something most series simply don’t manage to do.

you love the show, so why do you need a bunch of anonymous (likely) blowhards to justify your love for the show. i understand feeling bad for the actors who didn’t win despite putting in a lot of hard work, but you know, one of my favorite sports quotes applies here, “the other guys get paid too.”

moreover, some of you act like you are the ones who put in the hard work with all your “we” business. there is no “we” unless your name is in the credits at the end of the show.

The Emmys have never really been about this year, much like no one is really voting on one episode very often for directing and writing. Yes, it’s a flaw and the Emmys suck — all true — but it’s reality. That’s why I have no issues with it.

I wish those musicians had crossbows and could fire towards the Modern Family crew.

I’m calling it : the season based on the worst books will win more emmys than Season 3 and 4 combined (6) which were based on by far the strongest book of the series.

Before leaving the ceremony, the Hound would have grabbed McConaughey’s wife, slung her over his shoulder and stomped up the stairs and out the door. Isn’t she a sand snake? She would have fetched a fine ransom from Dorne.

I think GoT’s acting is as good as Breaking Bad. GoT’s cast is more diffuse, but the top actors shine just as bright as Cranston & Co and the lesser actors are generally better than BB’s supporting crew. There’s just less of the latter.

The direction and writing is not as artistic as BB, but a large function of that is simply scope, I think. Gilligan had one story to tell; D&D have about seven.

I don’t think D&D are as good storytellers as Martin is, and I’m not sure they are as good as Gilligan. But Gilligan’s difficulty level is much, much lower, and even they made some missteps. The first half of Season 5, for example, was pretty pointless and featured some characters making random choices. In other words, I think it is tough to be conclusive.

Can somebody Tweet The HBO staff and let them know Boobs don’t always win everything!

Anyway, those that are complaining that GoT does not have a chance next year because the rest of the books don’t compare to the first three ASOIAF series. Well, thank god it’s a TV show and not a book. I have faith in the showrunners making it a compelling TV season

As I suspected, Breaking Bad cleaned up on the awards. It’s a really good show, it was the last season, and that just tends to be how it goes.

I don’t tend to be much of an analyzing clothes person, but…

Lena looked gorgeous. I love how funky she usually is, but for an occasion like this I think elegant is the best way to go, and she certainly went that way. I don’t tend to like Natalie’s choices, but have to say I don’t think I’ve ever seen so good.

Rose seems to usually have a good sense of what will look good, and tonight was no exception.

Kit…well, in hopes of avoiding a barrage of “Kit can do no wrong” retorts, I’ll just make a general comment, and, of course, this is only my opinion: Men with their hair in a bun is not a good look.

As far as NCW goes, what can I say? Yes, he’s a good looking man, but in that tux? Daaaaamn. Holy shit. Wowza.

I’m devastated. This is not good for GoT. Where do they go from here? GoT has become wildly popular and probably the biggest show on TV. What happens now?

Ugh, I wish they would have won at least one award tonight. I think they have a great chance next year, though, especially Lena.

You got me; I tried watching it a couple of times and couldn’t get passed the horrible jokes at the expense of a group of people, the slapstick that was just dumb, or the reality show atmosphere. I think back on comedy shows that I loved like Designing Women or Bill Crosby, and wonder if there is anything like that any more

I don’t watch a lot of tv, so I can’t compare GOT with other shows; it is possible that these shows run circles around this series. But that doesn’t change the fact that its fan base grows every year, with every episode more people are picking up the books, and in fact, it was nominated for several awards, and actually one a few. I know how good the show is, and so do most of the rest of us. Those who work on the show have absoluteloy nothing to be ashamed of.

What happens now? The people who make the show are going to continue to create extraordinary shows. The fan base will continue to grow, and it will go down as one of the best shows ever. So it doesn’t win an Emmy; we know better!

Breaking Bad is a good show and deserves some of the praise it gets but I think it’s a little over-hyped due to it’s cool edgy premise and scenery chewing melodrama. I had Mad Men as my second choice and Breaking Bad as third.

Let’s face it though, a sizable minority of the Emmy voters will be like that friend of yours who refuses to watch anything with swords and dragons in it. You can see it every year when the AV club puts up a compilation of TV critic’s new years top ten lists and two thirds of them have GoT in the top five and the other third don’t have it on the list. This kind of math does not add up to an Emmy win.

I’ve said this pretty much every year since “Game Of Thrones” and it’s first season and long, long before that on other forums…the Emmy Awards are now confirming once more why they are irrelevant, useless and have no credibility whatsoever, if they had any to begin with…and why particularly fans of genre shows like ours already know what’s what, but also increasingly most television viewers in general are tunning out and turning away from these awards that clearly have little to nothing in common with them!

When I first arrived in North America and didn’t know any better, many years ago, I thought that the Emmy Awards were THE markers for “good television”…boy was I ever wrong, a fact which I rectified rather quickly by discarting and ignoring them…

I have a hard time taking ANY award show seriously, especially one that is supposed to recognize the best in television, which regularly ignored or excluded such amazing and groundbreaking tv programmes as “The Corner”, “The Wire”, “OZ” or “Brotherhood”, “Dead Like Me” and others we all know and love…

Shows like “Boardwalk Empire”, “The Walking Dead”, “Game Of Thrones”, and now this year’s “True Detective”, “Penny Dreadful” and increasingly “The Strain”, and of course others, arrived onto the scene, upended the stale and dreary environment of tv by changing the television landscape and showing what television could and should be and what us fans can and should expect to see!

These shows will continue to thrive and succeed inspite of Emmys, Golden Globes and anyother cockamemie self-congratulatory, bankrupt, compromised and meaningless trinket award!

As a fan I will continue to watch and appreciate these shows and be grateful for the hardworking people involved in their making! Afterall this is the best compliment we as fans can bestow on these series, “Game Of Thrones” and others!

Because frankly, speaking for myself only as a fan, I don’t give shit on the Emmy Awards and co.!!!!

Prediction for next year: After Sunday’s episode of HBO’s “The Leftovers,” I believe it will be a major contender at next year’s Emmys. The last scene was gut-wrenching.

You being serious right now?! I think i heard the main guy talk about how it was always about great storytelling?! Leftovers doesnt tell a story. It’s just random people living through their fucked up lives without any explanation for what’s going on. I lasted 5 episodes. It’s a pity HBO didnt take on American Gods instead than that trainwreck (and i am aware this seems to be one of those love or hate shows. I am definitely in second camp. Dont see enough people like it to win anything) It will be Boardwalk Empire’s last season next year. Wonder if they will get rewarded in a way? If TD cant do the same in S2 since usually its 2 HBO shows that get nominated (a lot) not more…

Buffy didn’t win a single Emmy and was only nominated for a writing award for Hush IIRC. The people who vote for the awards aren’t going to give genre TV a fair shake. GoT is big enough that I think it might contend after their final season but for the most part great shows like GoT and Orphan Black aren’t going to get a lot of love. Keep expectations as low as possible. Next year’s awards will have the finale seasons of Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire so I wouldn’t count on GoT cleaning up now that BB is out of the picture.

What do you want for an explanation? Aliens scarfing up folks randomly and putting them in their zoos? Or maybe God lost a bet with Lucifer and subsequently she gets 2% of the population for her own doing?

Perhaps “The Leftovers” does wander a bit, but I think the power of the show is the aftermath and the mystery….sort of like the “What If…” Marvel comics from the 80s. An explanation would defeat the story, imho. It is the utter lack of rationale that is intriguing. Nihilistic and surreal.

I’m one of those readers who usually digs the Jack McDevitt/Asimov hard science fiction stories and alternative hard fantasy (like ASoI&F and Covenant) but I am struck by the pathos and borderline insanity in this show. For a while I was wondering if the whole show was about the police chief slowly going insane and becoming a deranged serial killer….but the PoV take on things have convinced me otherwise. Some of the storylines seem like they were taken from Kurt Cobain’s lyrics and nightmares before he nullified himself. Although given that, I believe it is an odd tale of survival, like “The Road” by McCarthy. It even has “Magnolia” feel to it.

I say stick with it if you can. The last episode went back to the actual “event” and the character paths leading to the “event”. Fucking wrenching, man. In Utero, dude…in utero…

Glad i did not stay up to watch this,heard it was shit which it was exactly how i thought it would be . I’m sorry i know i’m supposed to be nonchalant about this and saying it doesn’t matter but after 4 years i’m sick of it, the academy’s biased opinion toward genre shows is too obvious and even if BB wasn’t competing they still wouldn’t have wn anything. Just say this to me how was Aaron Paul’s performance any different than anything he has done before,i like the guy but seriously ?

Bravo sir! Amen to that, could not agree more! I think even the eerie openning credits kind of tell you the type of show this isn’t! “The Leftovers” reminds me of the one other show where HBO tried to tell one of these weird storylines…

That show was “Carnivale”, which lasted two seasons , let’s hope that “The Leftovers” lasts enough where the whole story is told and brought up to a more coherent ending!

BB was brilliant and popular for a reason. Excellent writing, acting, directing. A modern classic.

Maybe GOT can win some trophies next year, but I fear season 4 could have been the best season of the whole show. Too bad the competition has been so strong this time.

I’m over the moon by the fact that Fukunaga won best directing. The man deserved it without a doubt, none of his competitors could hold a candle to his brilliance. TD, Jane Eyre and Sin Nombre were all home runs. I except even greater things from him in the future.

I’m with you on this one. Ever since I’ve watched Sin Nombre with director’s commentary, I’m in love with Cary, he deserves every award there is to be.

I’m not too disappointed with Thrones not winning any major categories, they had strong competitors, so it doesn’t feel like they were ‘overlooked’ deliberately. Besides they already won 4 Emmys which is great.
