It looks like Asher wasn’t the innocent little doucheface we all thought he was.

, Asher (Matt McGorry) has found himself drawn into the web of ADA Sinclair (Sarah Burns), who’s been blackmailing him to spy on Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) lest she reveal the supposed sordid details of what happened at Trotter Lake. However, on the precipice of leaking to Sinclair that Bonnie (Liza Weil) killed Sam (Tom Verica), Asher learned about the abuse Bonnie suffered at the hands of her father when she was younger. Will that stop Asher from turning on Team Keating? And, seriously, what happened at Trotter Lake? EW turned to McGorry to get the scoop:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: At this point, Asher has no idea the rest of the Keating Five was actually responsible for Sam’s death, but will he start to suspect something amiss with them?

MATT McGORRY: In some ways, he’s very sort of dull, and in other ways, a little more perceptive than we give him credit for. It’s clear that he knows he’s on the outside of the group in many ways. I don’t think he pieces together that it’s related to a murder, but it’s something that he senses. I think he’s pretty distracted. There’s a lot of stuff going on right now. Even as we saw in this last episode, he’s absent from a lot of the events involving the rest of the students and Annalise as he deals with his own decision making and the difficulties of essentially trying to figure out if he’s going to turn in Bonnie, and his own moral conundrum. He’s really tied up in that right now. I don’t think he would notice much more than that at the moment.

Is there anything you can tease about what happened at Trotter Lake?

Yeah, you will find out what Trotter Lake is in this week’s coming episode. You won’t have to wait that much longer. It’s a very dark, complicated issue. I’m very interested to see how people respond to it. It complicates his relationship with his own understandings of what’s right and what isn’t.

We saw that Asher learned about Bonnie’s past with her father. How does that change their dynamic?

He feels terrible. He feels really horrible for her. He really cares about her. He loves Bonnie. It’s really difficult to see someone you care about when they’ve been treated this way, especially as it relates to his understanding of how the murder of Sam came about. The fact that she was in the midst of being sexually assaulted when she killed Sam, at least as far as Asher understands, that makes it a lot more understandable for him in terms of the complications and how difficult it is. It’s not very black and white. It’s almost self-defense, really. It escalated beyond that, but it makes it more justifiable.

How is Asher going to lean on Annalise now that she’s let him into the inner circle?

He has faith that she can make Sinclair go away and deal with that issue. He places faith in her and in the group. His father reminded him accidentally of what kind of father he is, that he’s someone who looks out for himself. It’s a very complicated story line.

We know that in a few short weeks, ADA Sinclair will be dead, but what does Asher’s working relationship with her look like moving forward?

He’s just dodging her and hoping that Annalise is going to sort out those issues and make this something he doesn’t have to deal with. He has a lot of respect for Annalise’s legal ability. He’s seen her cunning and intellect at work before, so he does have confidence in her ability to deal with this situation.

In the flash-forward, we see that Asher has gone to the police. Can you talk a little bit about his mindset at that point?

Unfortunately I can’t, because I had no idea what it was in relation to when I shot it, [

] nor did I have any idea about essentially what was happening when I’m in the car with Bonnie when we drive to the gas station. We shoot those things without any kind of context. In my mind, I was filling in the blanks and trying to imagine what would’ve happened, which actually ended up being relatively close to what had happened. But now we really don’t have any information going into it.

With Sinclair trying to take Annalise down, will the Keating House become a dangerous place to work?

Yeah, I think it will. Obviously there’s a lot of tension. With everyone working in the same space, it becomes very emotionally claustrophobic. It’s a really difficult position for everyone to be in, especially since Sinclair is so relentless and very focused on taking Annalise down. She’s persistent and has a lot of resources. It really does become very trying, and she becomes the biggest threat and challenge to Annalise, the Keating Four and also me separately from that, and my father as well.

Are we going to see more of Asher’s relationship with his dad after he basically wrote him off?

Yeah, I believe we will see more of that. We will see more of his father than we did last year.

Any word yet on whether John Bennett will be back on

My answer is still, unfortunately, that you’ll have to wait and see.

Do you hope that Bennet can, at some point, redeem himself?

Sure, I’d love that. People are already starting to hate Asher and I’m now getting the response from people, “How does it feel to play the two most hated characters on television?” which is not particularly fun or enjoyable for me. So, yeah, I would hope so, because I love the story and because I’m tired of people s—-ing on my characters, but I guess it’s something that comes with the territory.
