The flash-forward reveal of who’s still alive wasn’t the biggest surprise during Thursday’s episode of

. That honor belonged to a steamy reunion between Bonnie (Liza Weil) and Frank (Charlie Weber).

Traveling to Coalport to pick up her father’s ashes, Bonnie tried to convince Frank to return home with her. The duo even had sex, but by the next morning, Frank had abandoned her. “She’s crushed and devastated and feeling really betrayed,” executive producer Pete Nowalk tells EW. “We will obviously see them interact again and it’s going to be messy.”

reveals much more information about the dynamic between Frank, Bonnie, and Annalise (Viola Davis) — this week’s flashbacks showed that Frank was rescued from prison years prior by Sam (Tom Verica) and Annalise. “Pete has done such an amazing job the last couple episodes trickling in these bread crumbs of Bonnie’s past and insights into how she operates,” Weil says. “It certainly comes to a crescendo in Coalport. There’s so much information on all of that stuff with Frank. The death of Bonnie’s father, though a relief, is still a huge loss to her. It triggers this need to belong to something and someone, and to restore that threesome to its former glory.”

“But there’s a desire to hit this hard reset button, and that informs the fantasy of them running away together,” Weil continues. “When Frank abandons her there — Bonnie has overcome so much to feel like she deserves friendship and companionship; it’s taken a real effort to tether herself to her current life. Once Frank leaves her there, it certainly makes all of those destructive feelings that she’s been fighting against for so long bubble to the surface. Moving forward, there’s definitely going to be a shift in how she views him. It’s a pretty devastating move on his part.”

However, Nowalk teases that Bonnie and Frank’s tryst might not be a new thing. “What’s interesting about when you watch episode 5 is they have a whole secret history between the two of them that we’re only starting to uncover it a little bit,” he says. “Yes, they sleep together, but I don’t know if that was the first time.”

“I do think that was a way Bonnie let herself be vulnerable with him again, and these are not healthy people,” Nowalk continues. “They’re really damaged, so they act out in ways that is inappropriate and then they have to deal with repercussions. Bonnie’s probably just ashamed of herself for even letting herself go there and hating that she seemingly fell for him.”

But Bonnie will have bigger problems to deal with, returning home just as Laurel (Karla Souza) reveals to Annalise that Bonnie was in Coalport with Frank. “We’re going to see how Annalise reacts to Bonnie seeing Frank in Coalport and how Bonnie is going to spin that,” Weil says. “It’s certainly a massive betrayal. There’s also a really interesting element going on in that Annalise, Bonnie, and Frank are all people that are expecting betrayal; it’s how they’re built. Bonnie is not entirely surprised that Laurel comes clean with Annalise — history would show that she almost has a compulsion to do what she thinks is right.”
