On October 27, 2010, it was confirmed that Jonghyun was in a relationship with actress Shin Se-kyung.[36][37] After nine months of dating, Se-kyung and Jonghyun broke up in June 2011, citing their busy schedules.[38]

On April 1, 2013, Jonghyun was involved in a car accident. When driving home late in the evening, his car went through a guardrail at Dongho Bridge, causing him to injure his nasal bone.[39][40] It was reported by SM Entertainment that he had received surgery on the injury. To focus on recovery, Jonghyun sat out most of Shinee's promotions for their title track, "Why So Serious?", though he rejoined for the final week.[41]
