What supposedly happens is this;
A person, particularly a young child, endures an exceedingly traumatic event (in numerous cases with MPD, severe childhood abuse), and in order to cope with the abuse he/she suffered, they split into personalities.
Why do they do this is still unknown to me. In one interview I watched, a woman's 5-year-old alter, a little girl named Mariah, said that when her host (the person with the disorder) was being sexually abused by a relative, she let the host 'go and hide', and Mariah came out and dealt with the abuse.
So perhaps the alters take on what happened and endure the memories for their host so the host doesn't have to suffer any longer.
The number of personalities a person can have is at least 2, the highest known number is 96 (the case of Truddi Chase). The most famous one is that of Sybil Isabel Dorsett, who developed 16 different personalities due to the horrific abuse she suffered at the hands of her schizophrenic mother.
The personalities can vary in age, and can be a different gender, race, speak a different language, and can even be an animal or imaginary creature (but in severe cases of Multiple Personality Disorder).
The alters are known to take over the host and basically come out if the host is under stress, or if the environment their host is in has provoked them (For example, in a documentary I watched, a woman, her husband, and two daughters were in a grocery store and the children spotted some treats. A five-year-old alter inside the woman was interested too, so she came out and asked for a treat).
I am now blabbing away, so I'll just stop writing my comment now. But this is the disorder that now currently greatly grasps my interest. :)
My mom has borderline personality, so watching her behavior was fascinating to me (sorta)
i have the simptons...lol
I myself think that i have schizoid personality, but i could be wrong, maybe it's depression or nothing at all.
It's like a combination of schizotypal personality and depression, were the social normes mean nothing. It's wonderful.
I have BPD, so while it does interest me, it mostly just drains me and I'm sick of dealing with any part of it.
I wish I had a bigger interest in OCD (itself and the personality disorder) because that interest may help me be more in tune with my partner's struggle with it rather than being frustrated. The distress narcissism has brought into my life also makes it difficult for me to be fascinated by it more than upset / drained.
Basically, I'm more interested when it's not so close to me. Unfortunately.
