Sex and the City Creator Darren سٹار, ستارہ Says the Show's Ending 'Betrayed What It Was About' 

While plenty of Big-and-Carrie endgamers swooned over the unavailable businessman’s long-awaited “I love you” in the

Darren Star personally finds the moment bittersweet.

In a new Kindle Singles interview, the series creator proposes that

‘s shipper-friendly ending was, in fact, a betrayal of the series he created.

Chris Noth (as Mr. Big) and Sarah Jessica Parker (as Carrie) in

Said Star, “For me, in a way – and I didn’t [write] those last episodes – if you’re empowering other people to write and produce your show, you can’t … say certain things.”

He continued, “At a certain point, you’ve got to let them follow their vision. But I think the show ultimately betrayed what it was about, which was that women don’t ultimately find happiness from marriage. Not that they can’t. But the show initially was going off script from the romantic comedies that had come before it. That’s what had made women so attached.”

“At the end, it became a conventional romantic comedy,” he concluded. “But unless you’re there to write every episode, you’re not going to get the ending you want.”

And Carrie’s beginning might have been quite different as well, reveals Star. Though Sarah Jessica Parker is now inextricably linked with the pun-loving sex columnist, Star reveals he had a back-up actress lined up to play the character.

In addition to the tidbit that Kim Cattrall was actually a replacement for younger actress Lou Thornton (

star Lisa Edelstein would have played the show’s heroine if Parker was unable to take the role.
