“Sleep, my love.” I whispered softly in her ear.

That could never happen to us. She’s too fragile. But how I wish I could love her too in that way. I shook my head once again.

I stared once again at her lovely face. Her brows furrowed. What is she dreaming? I smoothed out her hair. How I missed its soft silky texture. I lifted a handful of strands to my nose and inhaled deeply. Intoxicating…as always. She stirred. I started humming again. My humming stopped – I was caught off guard. Then the lyrics and melody flowed clearly on my mind.

I would have crawled back to Forks, to her, even if the fateful telephone call didn’t happen, even if Alice didn’t see her jump off the cliff.
