Well, like the other answers, not only was there a آگ کے, آگ nation village up the hill, but this was Sokka's task, not Toph یا Aang's. They were in firebender territory and it would have been a pretty dumb idea to do earthbending in the territory in case someone in the آگ کے, آگ nation army saw them. The group also didn't know that Sokka's master knew who they were already and that he didn't mind. Either way, it was mostly because it was آگ کے, آگ nation territory.
