Inspired after watching a volleyball ace nicknamed "Little Giant" in action, small-statured Shouyou Hinata revives the volleyball club at his middle school. The newly-formed team even makes it to a tournament; however, their first match turns out to be their last when they are brutally squashed by the "King of the Court," Tobio Kageyama. Hinata vows to surpass Kageyama, and so after graduating from middle school, he joins Karasuno High School\'s volleyball team—only to find that his sworn rival, Kageyama, is now his teammate.
Thanks to his short height, Hinata struggles to find his role on the team, even with his superior jumping power. Surprisingly, Kageyama has his own problems that only Hinata can help with, and learning to work together appears to be the only way for the team to be successful. Based on Haruichi Furudate\'s popular shounen manga of the same name,
Haikyuu!! is an exhilarating and emotional sports comedy following two determined athletes as they attempt to patch a heated rivalry in order to make their high school volleyball team the best in Japan.

Haikyuu!! Second Season, Haikyuu!!: Jump Festa 2015 Special
Haikyuu!! Movie 1: Owari to Hajimari, Haikyuu!! Movie 2: Shousha to Haisha
#1: "Tenchi Gaeshi (天地ガエシ)" by NICO Touches the Walls (eps 1-13)
Wow... I was never really planning on writing a review on MAL, but I just feel compelled to share my thoughts on this breathtaking anime.
It\'s everything you would expect in a sport anime, and more. It\'s a narrative about a school that was once successful, but is on its decline. Now the volleyball team has to rise back from it\'s grave. But what makes the story of Haikyuu!! stand out for me is how you get engrossed in the development of each character; you actually feel for them. Also, there are twist and turns here and there to keep you on your toes!
Stunning. The characters were drawn beautifully, facial expressions are on-point, and the in-game animation was choreographed perfectly. Each character has their own special feature so there\'s no confusion in distinguishing who is who. Only minor problem I noticed is that some shots were reused.
I am absolutely in love with the sound of Haikyuu!! The voice actors did an amazing job really portraying the personality of each character. The OPs and EDs fit the anime very well and are enjoyable. The soundtrack, oh man the soundtrack... it compliments and enhances every scene perfectly; it really hit the feels.
By far my favoirte part about Haikyuu!! From the very first episode, you can already feel the amount of personality that is in this anime. You would expect typical stereotypes brewed into all the characters, but no. Every single character has there own unique personality. And although, they are all on the same journey to greatness, each character has there own back story that shaped them into who they are. You really feel for them and get immersed as soon as you start watching.
As you can probably tell, I extremely enjoyed Haikyuu!! I honestly was not expecting much from it because I thought it was just going to be another spots anime, but man was I wrong. Haikyuu!! is a rollercoaster of emotions that will have you laughing, crying, and cheering throughout the whole ride.
Truly a masterpiece... I would recommend Haikyuu!! to anyone, but especially to people who are fans of sports anime or looking to try one. read more
Haikyuu!! is the starting point of my serve towards the court of sports anime. (Volleyball reference NAILED... or not.)
Being someone who plays volleyball myself, I instantly made a connection with the characters and the story of the anime.
Watching more of it, my passion towards volleyball boosted much higher, like Hinata\'s extraordinary jump as he spikes the ball.
Okay, I really need to stop making lame references and actually get into reviewing this terrific series.
Utterly, and completely. This was the first sports anime series that I have ever watched, but its story already impressed me since the first episode.
There is an element of reality in the story. I was really impressed with the knowledge it has. It really gave me a lot of volleyball skills which can easily be applied to real life games. (Although, of course, I\'m nowhere near the characters\' volleyball skills... oh well.)
It is a story of evolution, a story of improvement and pushing the characters to their highest points. The excitement is aptly sustained throughout the series (makes you go all "Gwahh!!" and "Aah!!!" when you finish watching an episode... please ignore my try-so-hard puns *you\'ll get it when you watch the series*).
There are unpredictable twists at times as well, making you ponder about it for a long time. At times, it will also make you stiffen as you stare at the screen with your jaw dropped, wondering what in the world just happened.
Wow, the animation is impressive. It clearly illustrates the spikes, the jumps, the beautiful serves that (the cutie) Kageyama, as well as other (cuties) characters\' skills. What I especially liked is that the art is very realistic - it makes you think that this is not just an anime series, but a real footage, of real people playing.
SPYAIR gave this series the best opening ever, and the directors of this anime series chose the best opening ever. "Imagination" will boost your excitement to the highest - I really did jump up and down whenever the song played. The ending was cute as well - it was upbeat, but it still had a certain depth that waited to be explored. (YURERU KAGEROUUU--- okay, I should stop.)
Just a little spoiler for those who haven\'t watched this series yet... Haikyuu!! Second Season\'s opening will also be a song by SPYAIR. So WATCH. It. xD
Wow. Just... wow. Haikyuu!! definitely blew me away at this area. To be honest, I... kind of expected typical -dere stereotypes shoved into the characters, but no. The personalities are varied and extremely appealing. From the seemingly tough Kageyama to the ever-energetic Hinata, you can clearly see the different auras each character radiates.
Furthermore, the characters all go through the same journey together, but with different perceptions based on their characteristics. All of them, however, will make you smile as they slowly, but surely, step onto the porch of maturity and spread their wings wide on the sky of life... all sweating and laughing after the hard work they have gone through.
In my opinion, a truly enjoyable series is something that will make me watch all of it, not just out of the feeling of accomplishment. And Haikyuu really achieved this.
The humor, mingled with deep moral lessons, shaped me into who I am now. I laughed, I cried, I thought, all because of this series.
Even if it has a hundred seasons, I will watch it all... because I know, with every episode, it will change who I am right now.
(Anybody up for Haikyuu!! Second Season? I\'m gnawing onto every single episode right now haha xD)
I have watched quite a few sports anime and I have to say that Haikyuu is so far the best of them. Most people would argue that Kuroko\'s Basketball is the best. Yes Kuroko\'s Basketball is really good but there are too many elements that just seem unrealistic. Haikyuu on the other hand is more down to earth and seems to be as close to reality as possible. The anime is more serious than its other counterparts and concentrates less on the ecchi/harem themes, which is a great thing.
I just love the story, the soundtracks, the characters and the pacing of the anime is quite good too. The artwork is more than adequate as well. To people planning on watching this- you won\'t be disappointed!! read more
To be honest, I\'m guilty of being biased and judgemental, and more than once to boot. A few years ago I had seen my friend\'s collection of Naruto manga. I scoffed and even teased him a bit, having seen what appeared to be ridiculous anime promos on TV aimed at children. Within a year, I had discovered anime and manga myself. I have since apologized. Then, a year ago in the fall FAL league, I found myself incredulous at how popular and highly praised the sequel to Kuroko no Basket was. Subsequently, I stumbled across a volleyball anime with what seemed to be an interesting premise.
Therefore, I believe apologies are in order. I\'m sorry, sports anime genre. I\'m sorry I looked down on you. I\'m sorry I didn\'t give you a shot sooner. I\'m sorry I wrote off Kuroko no Basket and Yowamushi Pedal and the several other of the genre I have since added to my plan to watch list. If you want to give thanks for my change of heart, you need look no further than a wonderful little gem called Haikyuu!!
Quickly becoming one of my favorite anime, Haikyuu!! was the show I looked forward to most each week. It is a well-rounded work that made every Sunday a little better. As today is the day it finished airing, I\'m a bit surprised that more people haven\'t completed it and/or written reviews. Hoping to help others that may not have given Haikyuu!! a chance, here I am now expressing my humble opinion.
Adapted from a Shounen Jump manga, the story could be boiled to to pretty typical shounen stereotypes. It contains an underdog, teamwork, perserverance, etc. However, in my opinion, Haikyuu!! integrates these themes incredibly well, and also sets itself apart from your run of the mill Jump product. The protagonists are relatively inexperienced and are far from being the best volleyball players out there. Crazy quick \'level up\'s don\'t exist, and you will find no inexplicable victories here. Instead, we receive a well crafted story with good pacing that follows the formation of the Karasuno to their foray into the high school volleyball circuit.
Another issue people typically have with the shounen genre is flat, 2-dimensional characters that have little or poor development. I like to think this problem does not plague Haikyuu!! In fact, I\'d say this is a strong point in relation to many other anime/manga. Haikyuu!! mainly focuses upon the exploits of the two main characters and the team as a whole, but does take the occasional detour to explore backstory, relationships, character development, comedic moments, and minor characters. That last item especially separates this show from the rest. A recurring theme throughout this sports anime is, not surprisingly, losing. I was very impressed with Haikyuu!! on how it depicts the emotions and point of view of nearly all minor characters, whether they appear again or not. For me, the level to which they were explored is rare among any story I\'ve come across. On a side note, having not experienced not much from the sports genre, I am no authority on how others deal with losing games. However, subjectively, I think it handles the concept fantastically, and possibly better than the above-mentioned basketball and biking anime. It spends a fair amount of time presenting how the characters react and cope with loss.
As far as technical aspects go, Haikyuu!! does not disappoint. The artwork is clean and the animation fluid. Production I.G. did a wonderful job putting together a great visual work. In addition, the OST is superb. Personally, the background tracks helped set the scene and kept me emotionally invested throughout intense, comedic, and dramatic scenes. I cannot compliment the audio side of this anime enough with how well it worked. As a bonus, I fell in love with all of the openings and endings. Hopefully, you\'re as lucky as I was.
I pray you give Haikyuu!! a chance. If you are new to the genre, this might be a gateway to a new horizon for you. If you have enjoyed sports anime before, Haikyuu!! will continue your enjoyment of the genre. Inevitably, this show is and will be compared to Production I.G.\'s other sensation, Kuroko no Basket. In the interest of bipartisanship and brevity, I will simply say that the main difference is that Kuroko no Basket relies more on spectacle, whereas Haikyuu!! integrates more realism. Regardless of opinion, I believe that you will really enjoy Haikyuu!!and, quite possibly, like me you will be eagerly awaiting season 2. read more
Both are sports anime. Haikyuu is more funny too than Kuroko no basket. Both anime have a group of colorful characters and two main characters that are aiming to be the best at something . One is Volleyball and the other is basketball.
Both of them have intense sport matches and an interesting development of the characters.
An unlikely duo trying to do their best in order to overcome their weaknesses and bring out the best in their teams. Both shows have a similar cast which share various humorous conversations. Either through hard work and practice or with talent, the characters are overcoming their obstacles one by one in order to achieve their dreams. That, of course, doesn\'t mean there aren\'t any bumps in the road. Haikyuu!! focuses more on the real aspects of sports, while Kuroko no Basket focuses on the suspenseful, which makes it seem over the top quite a few times.
Same plot style, story-telling style, characters interaction style.. The two just have same style, nearly in everything.
You should enjoy the other if you enjoy the one. except you are one easy bored person. Such same style can make you boring when you watching the second.
Kuroko no Basket and Haikyuu has a similarity in two characters sharing a dream and competing to be the very best. They are both part of a team as well and goes up against powerful adversaries to prove their worth. There is decent humor coming from the character interactions and stylish plays each episode plays out. Do note though that Kuroko no Basket has more of over-the-topic antics with its gameplay. But nonetheless, I would recommend both series especially if you\'re a sports fan looking to see players strive to succeed and trying to make their dreams becoming a reality.
It has almost the same feeling. Well, Haikyuu\' duo might be slightly more comical and has more "rivalry" relationship than Kagami&Kuroko.
both sports anime made by Production I.G. revolving around hand based sports with small 5-6 man teams. similar atmosphere and focus for both is on bond between 2 highschool first year MC\'s where one supports the other to score with their impressive jumping ability.
Kuroko no Basket and Haikyuu give a similar feeling of intensity during games, as sports anime, and have both comedy and drama. They also have a similar focus on friendship and competition between team members.
The first thing I thought of when I started watching this anime was Kuroko no Basket. In relation to Kuroko no Basket, two players with extraordinary talent need one another in order to reach their full potential. In Haikyuu!!, Kageyama and Hinata were enemies at first, but end up playing for the same team when they enter high school. Kageyama is only interested in being a setter and Hinata strongly prefers being a spiker. The two must learn to work together in order to form a perfect duo to be the team that can stay on the court the longest.
-feature two players that at first don\'t get along well.
-have a duo of a skilled player and one with potential to get better.
Haikyuu!! focuses more on realism than Kuroko no Basket, which utilizes more spectacle.
Both awesome sports anime about unlikely talents, teaming up with someone very talented, to make a successful team.
they are both my favorite sport anime I really think anyone
if you like the games in knb you will love them in Haikyuu!!
they make you want too see more and never get bored
their relationships is what made me love haikyuu so much as knb
Kuroko no Basket and Haikyuu!! are both sports-themed anime with a well developed, dynamic cast of main characters. The characters are portrayed with contrasting personalities which makes the show interesting as it is not overly fixated on merely the abilities of the strong players, but also how the players overcome their various challenges (regardless of height, personality, past grudges etc) to improve as a team. If you have watched either, it is highly likely that you\'ll enjoy the other as well.
both are sport anime and both have a lot of great characters. They both involve a sport duo (Kagami and Kuroko/ Hinata and Kageyama) who work together to get their team to the top.
Both have two strong players join the same team.
Though both are different sports, they have the same atmosphere.
They both are sports animes, although different sports, the animes have a similar feel to them. Kuroko no Basuke and Haikyuu!! are both very engaging and have good, interesting characters.
Both made by Production I.G, both have two strong players join the same team, though both are different sports, they have the same atmosphere and both protagonists aim for victory and are highly motivated.
The story lines themselves are totally different, but if you enjoy sports anime or liked Kuroko no Basket, then you will definitely enjoy Haikyuu. Both have really strong and likeable characters then have a \'never give up\' attitude and the matches themselves will leave you on the edge of your seat.
- There are mainly two main protagonists in both the anime.
- the depiction of the story and character developments are similar too.
- Ther is fair amount of comedy in both of them.
Sports, bishounen guy, tournament that very fierce and competitive, plenty of talented players and rivalry of two protagonists are themes that both anime shared very much.
Both are sports anime and both offer an adrenaline rush while the main characters are pushing their hardest to get a win. Personally i feel Kurokos is a bit more toned down in comparison to Haikyuu but bother are excellent.
Both anime have characters who are hard working and passionate about sport. They also have one thing in common that stood out for me! Thats how each individual character is much more effective working in a team rather than facing challenges on their own. Art is quite similar in a way and If you enjoyed watching kuroko no basket, I guarantee you will love Haikyuu.
Both are sport anime. Both are the story of a team going throw competitons. They both have as main characters two guys that do not do well at the beginning. For me, both were addictive from the beginning to the end and i can´t wait for the respective sequels
-You can learn a few sports life lesson (I\'m not sure about KnB though)
Both of these animes have loveable characters with a great sports theme
A short guy with exceptional skills at only one speciality (Passing or spiking) teams up with a more serious genious type who aims to be the best. These two friends later find a mediocre high school team to face some old friends from middle school as enemies in high school, while carrying that team to victory. They both have a colorful cast, exciting matches, shounen aspects and godlike sport skills that surpasses professionals.
Both anime series are thrilling sports anime with two main chars that become a duo and in both series they rely on each other alot and form special attacks thanks to the help of the other. While in Kuroko No Basuke they play basketball and in Haikyuu!! they play Volleyball. Both of them feel extremely similar.
Both anime are sports anime. They both have good character development and similar art style. The matches in both anime are intense and also give the watcher a sense of victory when the main characters win.
These are sports shows and they have really similar story. Kuroko feels bit like there is supernatural element that makes it feel exaggerated and unrealistic where Haikyuu feels more probable (at least at this point, after first season).
Both of these shows have humor and they try to have emotional moments.
Both series are composed by a surprising duo that combines to become stronger and more efficient after training.
Also, the same goal (defeating other teams) is present and the characters look alike; they all have a special ability making them powerful in their own domain.
If you are looking at this recommendation, i do hope that you check out Haikyuu!!. Why? If you like sports anime, then this shouldn\'t disappoint you. Both anime feature a team who is aiming to be the best in their sports, but there is going to many rivals with common goals, so to be the best, they must be stronger than all of them. The characters will grow stronger as the plot follows.
It is obvious that it\'s two anime based on sport. Haikyuu is about volley-ball.
It\'s more based on true feelings that we can go through as a volleyball player, which I am and which i can definitely confirmed. I started haikyuu at first, and it gave me chills.. Really. When i ended the first season, i was so excited about the second one, that I had to calm down my restlessness. So I started KnB, and as in KnB, we go through a lot pain, struggle in every kind: about a situation, a relationship..
I was really surprised to like it as Haikyuu which the story speaks me more because of the fact that i love volley ball and that i truly know what they are talking about because I\'ve been through it. But KnB showed me the complexity of a basket ball game.
KnB and Haikyuu share those strong feelings we can go through in sport. It\'s hard to stay emotionless, because it is undeniable that it is what\'s making us alive.
Both great sports anime although I enjoyed Kuroko no Basket more. Both have:
This is a sports Anime, both Anime centre around main characters trying to better themselves in their respective sports, Haikyuu!! may not have as many episodes as Kuroko no basket but the story development and animation for both are great.
-There is two players that at first don\'t get along well.
In both, first year duo enters the team and makes the team stronger with their unique qualities.
Both main focuses are sports, Volleyball and Basketball respectively
Both have great displays of friendship, team building and great personalities developing
Both are exciting, competitive and bring GREAT sense of humor to the plate.
Haikyuu!! reminds me a lot of Kuroko no Basket in terms of humor, action level and how exciting it is to watch! The main character is funny, full of energy and doesn´t have the immediate tools to succeed at what he wants to do, this and the ever exciting oposing teams makes for an always exciting story. This Anime really pulls you in and makes you, as you should, root for the home team!! read more
I watched tHaikyuu right after finishing Kuroko\'s Basketball, and I noticed a lot of similarities.
An easily excitable ace and a seasoned support-role player team up. There\'s clashes at first but they soon become an unstoppable duo.
The advancement of the team into various competitions - from practice matches to regional tournaments. It all happens at the same pace.
The characters, plot progression, and humour all have close similarities. If you don\'t want to let go of Kuroko\'s Basketball yet, this is a good one to shift on to. You will most likely enjoy one if you enjoyed the other.
Both sport anime\'s, one basketball one volleyball. Both have two main characters trying to be the best and they use each other to be better.
A gift for sports fans, both series delivers themselves with competitive teamwork and plays that focuses on development. The main characters has a passion for the sport that they are playing and works towards their goal to becoming stronger each episode. Their teammates helps them along the way while tackling through difficult obstacles. It is realistic as we see how much the characters grow through their development over the course. I recommend both series especially if you\'re the type into sports with competitive team play.
Both are sports anime. One is about volleyball and the other is about baseball. Both anime have highly passionate main characters who are aiming for the top.
1. Main character generally sucks in the sport of his choosing, but has that one "special" ability which allows him to somewhat function
2. He is surrounded by teammates that are either as generic as they come, or also have some sort of a "special ability"
3. In both shows, MCs learn that special abilities aren\'t enough so they try to incorporate more stuff into their arsenal
9. Both follow every cliche you can find in the sports genre
10. Both are easy and fun anime to kill your time
Differences? One is about Baseball while the other one is about Volleyball.  read more
The main character starts with a team made of newbies from an unknown school.
The main character goes to an elite school for the sport.
They are both freshman going into high school.
They both have rivals on the same team.
This two overpowering and rip-roaring sports shows contains the \'team work\' in all its magnificence. With competitive, stubborn and hard-working main characters, both shows bring sports anime into a definitely higher level. Excellent character development, in high school setting.
The main characters are pretty similar. Both of them are passionate about their respective sports and are determined to become the ace of their teams. They also find themselves competing with a talented member on the same team. Both the shows focus on team work and partnerships within the team.
Both main characters are very talented, competitive, somewhat hard-headed, and are very enthusiastic about the sport they love.
Both MC\'s are often underestimated by others but always manage to surprise the people around them about what they can do and how much potential they really have.
Before they went to high school, both MC\'s were from middle schools that are no good in the particular sport.
One is about baseball and the other is about volleyball; however, both anime have that element of "excitement" that will leave watchers hanging after every episode. Both are great!
If you love one of these two anime you\'ll surely love the other! read more
Both have underdog protagonists that are optimistic, love the sport they play and have a lot of talent even though their experience in the sport might be less than most of the other players.
Both about a partnership formed in the team and how they work together to overcome obstacle.
Though they both have a "main" protagonist, ultimately, both animes has two main protagonists that it develops over the course of the series.
If you like one, you would most definitely like the other.
When I watched this show, one thing constantly popped up in my head. That was, "This show is incredibly similar to Haikyu".
Not only do these shows revolve around high school sports, but the main characters are determined first years who are striving to be the \'ace\' of their team. In an instant, they develop a rivalry with another boy but realize quickly that the team cannot do well without either of them. The main event of both shows is the yearly national high school tournament in which they partake, attempting to bring back their high school\'s former glory. With lots of practise and intense matches, both main character\'s skills begin to shine, gaining them acknowledgement from their 3rd year seniors who for them, this will be one of their last if not their last high school tournament. read more
Great funny, Action pack sporty anime that will make you laugh cry and jump out of your seat to cheer.
Diamond no Ace and Haikyuu! are shounen sport animes and both are intense. I consider that you watch these animes. Both have second seasons and also have intense action. So they have many similarities in most areas.
Both anime are sports anime where the main protagonist is focused on trying to become the ace of their team. Both Hinata and Sawamura have formidable opponents to compete with for the title of ace, and have prominent character development throughout the story. Hinata and Sawamura are both outgoing and charismatic characters who are beneficial to the team, even if they aren\'t in their preferred position. However, Haikyuu!! is volleyball and Diamond no Ace is baseball, but they share major key components, and both shows are very enjoyable.
Oofuri and Haikyuu both have main characters who have unique abilities that can surprise opponents despite their silly and weak appearances.
There\'s also a bond between the two teammates that develops overtime through compromise and overcoming each other\'s strengths & weakness. (Like Mihashi & Abe\'s battery, and Hinata & Kageyama\'s Setter and Spiker teamplay) If you enjoy a light hearted sports anime then you\'ll love both of these!
Ookiku Furikabutte (Oofuri) is about baseball and Haikyuu!! is about volleyball.
Shouyou from Haikyuu reminds me a bit of Mihashi from Oofuri.
They both trained a lot to get better and they also both have a huge handicap. for Shou it\'s his small height and for Mihashi his low self-esteem.
Still these boys are eager to win for sure and refuse to give up!
Only have watched the first aired episode of Haikyuu but I can already feel that I will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed watching Oofuri.
And I think it\'s totally worth checking out both if you like sports anime and if you like adorable dorks with their own abilities! read more
The teamplay between the two main characters is very similar, as well as the attitude of Kageyama and Abe towards Hinata and Mihashi.
I have no clue why KnB and DnA have more recommendations than this because Oofuri is actually the closest thing to HQ!!. Very similar main characters as well as side...
Abe/Kageyama, Mihashi/Hinata, Tajima/Nishinoya, Hanai/Suga (and Asahi) and many more.
What else can I say? Cute boys doing sports and bonding as a team. High doses of character development and adrenaline in each match to get you hyped up for your favourite teams.
Both are sports anime. Both give off a feeling of happiness, and a love for the sport they are playing.
Both have a main character who is good at what they do, but amazing when put with a pitcher/setter.
If you liked Haikyuu/Oofuri pretty sure you will enjoy this anime as much as you enjoyed Haikyuu/Oofuri.
In Haikyuu is not just volleyball, is also training, working the relationship with teammates and some enjoyable moments. This is what makes you feel the flavour of victory or defeat even if you haven´t played the match, even if is something fictional.
In both animes they don´t simply focus on the main team, also in rivals. Strategy is something overriding. Also every single character has their own personality.
So if you liked Haikyuu/Oofuri give this anime a try, even if you dislike baseball/volleyball. read more
They\'re both similar in terms of content and entertainment value. Both are anime about sports, Haikyuu!! being about Volleyball and Ookiku Furikabutte being about Baseball.
The main characters are both cute boys with unique abilities that makes them stand out and take their opponents by surprise.
If you enjoyed one, you will surely enjoy the other. I personally have a preference for Haikyuu!! however, even tho they\'re both great anime.
**For people that have watched/are watching Ookiku Furikabutte already and are considering other sports anime:
If you were able to find an pretty old and hidden gem like Ookiku Furikabutte (Oofuri) out of the many sports animes out there, you have probably already heard of some of the very popular sports animes, such as Free!, Haikyuu, Kuroko no Basket, Daiya no Ace, Baby Steps, and etc.
I will tell you right off the bat that I 10/10 reccomend Haikyuu above all other sports animes if you like Oofuri and want more of the same kind of sports anime experience.
"But why not DAIYA NO ACE? Isn\'t DAIYA NO ACE (dna) a baseball anime like Oofuri?"
I can almost guarantee that if you like Oofuri you won\'t like dna. While Oofuri focuses on the dorkiness, adorableness, and friendships of the characters that can come with sports anime, dna mostly focuses on the shounen and classic anime aspects that can come with sports anime. Judging by Haikyuu\'s popularity, if Oofuri had come out at the same time as dna, just when sports animes were getting popular, then Oofuri would definitely be more popular than dna. Only because Oofuri was revolutionary and came out before its time did its popularity die down, causing it to currently be less popular than the other sports animes.
Haikyuu and Oofuri both have the exact same kind of dorky characters and cute friendships while still focusing on the mechanics of the sport and making the games themselves very interesting. The two main characters of each anime almost have the identical kind of symbiotic relationship. In Oofuri, Abe uses his strategetic thinking to the fullest to make use of Mihashi\'s abnormally slow, and what would usually be considered bad and easy to hit, fastball pitches, and turn them into one of the hardest pitches to hit. In Haikyuu, Kageyama\'s accurate and presise setting make up for Hinata\'s lack of experience with volleyball while making great use of Hinata\'s amazing jumping skills.
If you\'re not looking for dorkiness and just want another baseball anime, then go ahead. But if you are looking for a sports anime with the same kind of adorableness and dorkiness and cute friendships as Oofuri, don\'t go watch daiya no ace and expect to find the same dorkiness you found from Oofuri just because it\'s the same sport.
**For people that have watched/are watching Haikyuu already and are looking to delve deeper into the sports anime abyss:
I can\'t believe that there are more recs for Kuroko no Basket and Daiya no Ace than Ookiku Furikabutte. Wow. Anyways...
Here are the main points, because this is a long rec:
-Main focus on friendships and mechanics of sport, and put more of a focus on competition itself rather than competetiveness or rivalry
-Cute and nice art style, easy to understand what is going on during games, no long yaoi faces and weird yaoi-like proportions like Kuroko no Basket
-Same kind of symbiotic relationship between the two main characters of both shows
-Ookiku Furikabutte side characters have less impact than Haikyuu side characters, but that is only because Haikyuu does the most amazing job out of any anime ever at making all of the side characters exteremly loveable. There is a place in my heart for every single character in Haikyuu, no matter how insignificant, and no other anime has even gotten close to competing with this
-Volleyball is usually viewed as more entertaining than baseball, but Ookiku Furikabutte makes watching anime baseball just as interesting as Haikyuu makes watching anime voleyball interesting
-If Ookiku Furikabutte hadn\'t come out before the rise in popularity of sports animes, it would definitely be on the same popularity level as Haikyuu, and would DEFINITELY be more popular than Daiya no Ace, the other baseball anime which somehow has more recs than Ookiku Furikabutte
-Super dorky and adorable, I can not emphasize this any more
While Daiya no Ace (dna) and Kuroko no Basket (knb) are at the same popularity level as Haikyuu in terms of sports animes, besides being sports animes and having all of the basic traits of sports animes, they aren\'t very similar to Haikyuu.
Ookiku Furikabutte (Oofuri) is a baseball anime, while Haikyuu is a volleyball anime. They both take place in high school, and the manga for both of these are still ongoing if you finish the show. (Although Oofuri doesn\'t update as much due to lack of translators)
Oofuri emphasizes on the dorkiness and adorableness of the characters and the bonding between them while still paying attention to and highlighting the mechanics of the games in the same way as Haikyuu. The way that they focus on the friendships between the characters is unique compared to the other sports animes, and the way that they balance this focus on dorky people and their dorky friendships well with the actual sport and mechanics of the sport make the two anime a perfect pair.
In both Oofuri and Haikyuu, the two main characters rely on each other symbiotically, and by working together, they enhance each other\'s skills to create better potential for their team. In Haikyuu, Kageyama\'s accurate and presise setting make up for Hinata\'s lack of experience with volleyball while making great use of Hinata\'s amazing jumping skills. In Oofuri, Abe uses his strategetic thinking to the fullest to make use of Mihashi\'s abnormally slow, and what would usually be considered bad and easy to hit, fastball pitches, and turn them into one of the hardest pitches to hit.
Also, even though the art style of Oofuri isn\'t as incredible as Haikyuu, they still manage to illustrate the actual sport playing very well. Even if you don\'t know anything about baseball going into this anime (like me when I started watching Oofuri) you will be able to catch on pretty quickly. (And hey, at least they don\'t have long yaoi faces like knb or look bland like dna)
The only reason one might not like Oofuri as much as Haikyuu (besides that a lot of people don\'t like baseball as much as volleyball) is that side characters aren\'t as loved as much in Oofuri, at least compared to Haikyuu. When watching Haikyuu, it doesn\'t matter how much screen time a side character gets, or whether they are on a team opposing the main characters, you will still completely fall in love with them, along with literally every single other character in the entire show. Even the score keeping high schoolers which flash by only a few times in the show will have a special place in your heart. As for Oofuri, the side characters sometimes dont stick in your head as much, mainly because a lot of them look the same and don\'t have many varying traits. Although many of the side characters find a place in your heart as you watch the show, many just don\'t make a big enough impact compared to Haikyuu, where every single character is precious.
The main reason Oofuri doesn\'t get as much attention as Haikyuu is that Oofuri came out before sports anime became super popular like they are now. If Oofuri had come out more recently, it would surely be as popular as Haikyuu. (And definitely more popular than dna, which is only more popular and reccomended than Oofuri because it came out more recently and is the only recent baseball anime)
But seriously, the dorkiness and adorableness of Haikyuu and Oofuri can\'t even compare to dna and knb. If you love dorky sports boys, please watch Oofuri. read more
The main theme for both series is the realism. Main characters from both series are beginners in their sports. Hinata=Vollyball and Maruo=Tennis. They wil grow stronger throughout the series. Great characters who support the main characters. You will learn a great deal about said sport in both series. Currently airing this year.
Both series feature competitive sport and although they are of different nature has the same mood. The main male protagonist is part of a team/club. They get involved against other players/teams to test the limits of their abilities. There is a lot of realism in both series with no superpowers but rather relying on strategies, teamwork, guts, and instinct. I recommend both sport series for anyone interested in the sports genre with fun and competition.
Both of these sports anime make more of an attempt to be more realistic than something like Kuroko No Basket (or Prince of Tennis). (Even though they\'re a whole lot of fun to watch too :) Baby Steps has a few problems with the art, but if you can get past those, you\'ll find a great fast-paced story.
Both of them are about someone new to a sport and works very hard to become better - Baby steps has a hint of romance in it, which haikyuu do not
SPORTS + BROMANCE: Both shows passion for sports, Swimming and Volleyball, for only high school students.
Lots good humour, bromance, beautiful men, and badassery.
Both main characters start off as rivals in both shows, but in the end, good teamwork and friendship empowers all. You\'ll learn to love all the characters as well. :3
The art in both is similar. They are both about sports and have two main characters who are friends and rivals at the same time. There is a LOT of bromance in these two anime.
If you love the up-beat feel and adorably hilarious characters of Free!, you will enjoy the close friendships and on-point comedy of Haikyuu!!
Haikyuu!! has significantly less fanservice and little more focus on the team as a whole, and overall is the best sports series I\'ve seen to date.
I\'m pretty new to Anime and especially MAL, so this is my first recommendation but I honestly cannot stress it enough. I came straight into Anime and Free! was one of my first choices, I loved it, especially the whole slice-of-life and friendship story lines, they\'re really relatable. I told my friend I was desperate to find another Anime just like it with the same ideas of coming together as a team and breaking down walls to salvage and build new friendships and she recommended Haikyuu!!
If I\'m being honest when I first started watching it, I wasn\'t too sure if it was my kind of thing, the artistry let me down a little but now I\'m nearly caught up on the series and it\'s filled that gap that Free! left. Haikyuu!! is based around young boy, Hinata, striving to become an "Ace" in Volleyball and he faces many obstacles but as he joins the team, finds his place in his group of friends their power as a group strengthens, similar to the story of the swimmers in Free! Both Animes show that you can start from the very bottom and work your way up to the top when you have a group of friends helping and supporting you along the way. In addition, Haikyuu!! has wonderful humour and the characters (especially Tanaka) have made me laugh a lot through out the episodes.
Don\'t let anything put you off, I honestly recommend this Anime as a breath of fresh air, filled with the teamwork, friendship, hardships and humour just as in Free! but with it\'s own unique story and style. read more
Different sports yet both series have high spirits when it comes to teamplay. The main male characters are part of a team in the perspective sport they are involved in. But with that also comes adversaries and obstacles they must overcome. Considering to be an underdog, both series highlights their growth. At the same time, other characters on their team also get insight on their roles in the story. I recommend both series for sports fan interested in teamwork and a competitive atmosphere.
Both main characters, Onoda and Hinata strive to become better at their respective sport. Also, Imaizumi and Kageyama are both simiilar since they are already considered high tier players when the show starts.
Both shows have intense cliffhangers, and an urge to keep watching the show, hoping that the main characters will find success and be victorious in their battles.
Both main characters are very persistent and work very hard to succeed
Both main characters are surrounded by a group of supporting teammates
Both sports anime. Main characters are untrained in their sport, but still amazing at it. Both have very lovable main characters with friendly teammates.
