آپ know, before I watched this movie, just سے طرف کی going on the عنوان alone, I was expecting this to be a different horror movie, old victorian London hunters killing witches in an epic duel, all that stuff. But this movie has no monsters, no slasher villains, not really much horror. But the concept of it, the themes that it portrays, and how uncomfortable آپ will feel watching this film, that will make آپ see this film as a horror movie. Of course, I still kinda wish it was an old London witch hunt, but for real witches. But nonetheless, on the fourth دن of Cultober, let’s take a look at the 1968 film Witchfinder General
Witchfinder General follows the adventure of a young soldier named Marshall searching for the Witchfinder Hopkins, an evil man who kills those that he suspects as witches for the sake of profit, manipulating the villagers into thinking their محفوظ سے طرف کی accusing innocent people of witchcraft. After Hopkins’ partner rapes his fiancee and kills his priest friend, he tracks down the Witchfinder to kill him and get revenge. This doesn’t really sound like a horror movie, I know. It sounds مزید like something from John Wick, minus the dog killing and lack of contraband, but it’s the fact that how some of these darker themes are shown that makes the movie a horror film. Rape, torture, blackmail, revenge, and witch trials. The movie starts with a woman screaming سیکنڈ before she is hung from the gallows. And the evil on Hopkins himself, who is played سے طرف کی the horror acting legend himself, Vincent Price.
Originally, the director of the film didn’t really want Vincent Price, saying that his acting in the horror فلمیں of old were too campy for a movie like Witchfinder General, among a lot of other things behind the scenes, but that’s another story. But boy, was he and a lot of people surprised سے طرف کی his change in tone for this movie. Instead of being campy and cheesy, he is deathly serious. It’s actually super creepy how he denounces a raping from his own witch hunter group and how calm he is just سے طرف کی watching the death of a supposed witch. It’s amazing how disturbing آپ can make a man, even someone with a Lord Farquaad haircut.
I will say though, aside from that, it’s hard to find out what else makes this considered a horror movie. Some would consider this a drama, a historical fantasy, but I doubt anyone would consider it a horror film. Well, Wikipedia does, so screw it, I’m sure it’s correct. But I think the اگلے part of horror comes from the end of the film, between the confrontation of both Marshall and Hopkins involving a scene with an axe. Apparently, Price was drunk that day, so the director told the actor for Marshall’s character to actually hit him, but someone else fitted Price’s suit with foam so he wouldn’t be in pain. Those strikes from the axe آپ see, those were real hits. Price was actually getting hit there. Also, the characters mental state all goes to hell around this part of the movie, so that also helps with the themes of horror for this film.
Witchfinder General is a very good film that talks about the مزید haunting subjects of the 1600s and is a film that anyone should watch… But is it really a horror film. I personally can see the merits of it being a horror film. I think that it can be one. It’s definitely not a scary film, سے طرف کی any means, but it gets the basic idea of horror down and manages to succeed in that regard. And it must’ve done something right, as it managed to be a cultural impact on the world. Enough of an impact for a band to name themselves after the film, anyway. Check out Witchfinder General. It’s worth a watch
