Hey… So it’s been a bit since I did one of these. I’m gonna level with you, people, I did not enjoy 2020 and, despite having so much free time, I felt very unmotivated to try digging up the PS2 every time I popped in the PS4. I didn’t want to try any of the old stuff and just wanted to dedicate my time to one console. Not to mention, the pain in the پچھواڑے, گدا of finding a decent PS2 game when they can go for over a hundred dollars tops. That said, after my سب, سب سے اوپر 20 Games of 20202 مضمون and being really proud with how it turned out, I thought about giving PS2 games a try. I don’t hate talking about them. Hell, I love looking into the strange لائبریری of obscure PS2 titles. آپ can find a lot of cool stuff there. Even the bad stuff has this sort of charm to it, like Yanya Caballista having cool designs despite being the most frustrating game I’ve ever played یا Marc Ecko’s Getting Up has this cool urban setting despite being one of the most atrocious games ever. But when آپ can find something good, it may work out. And hey, maybe today’s game will be something special. I hope. I really fucking hope.
So already from the cover of the box, I’m getting mixed messages. The game is called Mad Maestro, and it features this little conductor on the front cover inside of a big musical hall. But if that’s the case, why is the عنوان font in this sort of urban graffiti style. I expect this for some PS2 games like Freekstyle, the extreme sports game. Sure, it could work for a rhythm game. But not Mad Maestro. And the game is rated E for Mild Violence. What does the game mean سے طرف کی that? Well I guess we’ll find out soon enough. So Mad Maestro was developed سے طرف کی a Japanese studio called Desert Productions. They were a very small Japanese studio who only worked on Tomarunner for the PS1 and another PS2 game called ChainDive. They never made much else that was known here in America after the PS2 era, so I can only assume that they are super underground, even for me, یا they went defunct after ChainDive in 2003. The game was also published سے طرف کی Eidos, now a part of Square Enix, but under their Fresh Games division. Fresh Games was a project to localize مزید Japanese style games in the west, and published some titles like Legia 2, which sold poorly in America, R-Type Final, which sold badly in America, Mr. Mosquito, which sold badly in America, and of course, Mad Maestro… What do آپ think happened? Needless to say, after this, they stopped with the Fresh Games attempt and just fucked off to شامل میں Square after just four games. Is there a reason why Mad Maestro went over یا was it just too niche for us Americans? Let’s take a look.
Mad Maestro follows our main character, Takt, this Arin Hanson looking motherfucker who runs an orchestra band at the city's local theater hall. However, the city has decided that the hall is too old and needs to be torn down. But Takt isn’t going to let that happen. A typical “We gotta save the old monument” story. So Takt gets the help of a flying fairy that tells him that she can find people around the city to help him and so they begin to تلاش to find clowns, lions, aliens, and some other people to شامل میں their orchestra… Oh I’m sorry, did I miss a few steps in the plot? Well it certainly sounds that way, but no, this game just goes a bit from reasonably cartoony but grounded to just total madness before آپ even realize it. I know rhythm games aren’t exactly giving much time for story, and Mad Maestro sure ain’t blowing anyone away with a new story, but man, this is just from the back of the box. And I will say, playing and beating the game, there’s no false advertising here. Honestly, I thought I was seeing aliens from the start, because god, early CGI cutscenes make these characters look fucking ugly. And I know it’s unfair to compare this game to Final Fantasy X which came out at around the same time when this was a small Japanese studio probably barely managing to stand on its own, but fucking hell, these characters are ugly. Women with massive balloon tits, a manlet with giant lips, this weird stick woman walking around and getting furious, it’s enough to make a man puke. But I won’t lie, there is this sort of French caricature sort of style going on, and I think it was intended to be مزید like that, but it just wasn’t executed well enough. Like if the graphics were less disgusting, I think it could pull it off. But how’s the gameplay?
Well the tutorial, that just tells آپ the controls rather than just lets آپ play it out yourself to get a feel for it, makes it sound way مزید complicated than it needs to be. آپ just pick one of the four face buttons. Triangle, Square, X, یا Circle, doesn’t matter. Then آپ just press it and time it right. But آپ press the button depending on what color the دائرے, حلقہ is. Blue is soft, green is medium, and red is hard. آپ gotta time it right depending on how close the four circles are, since the timer for the prompts goes in a counterclockwise motion. The closer they are, the faster they are. If there’s a star, آپ hold the button down and let go when it feels right. Also if آپ see an arrow in the اگلے prompt, just hold the arrow buttons in that direction. I found myself fucking this up a lot because I thought آپ had to press it at the right time along with the ease of the button, but no, آپ just hold the arrow down. آپ can hold it down whenever and it won’t affect your button prompts that don’t have arrows. آپ just gotta make sure آپ are holding the arrow button in the right spot when it gets to the prompt. Just don’t hit too hard یا too softly یا it’ll be for nothing. Honestly, without the use of a tutorial that lets آپ play it, and instead tells you, it makes the starting missions way مزید challenging than they need to be. I will say that, as I learned on my own, and started to get the hang of it, with the tempo rising and falling, having to push the buttons at the right time, I was starting to get into it, if only until I knew I hit a prompt right and got taken out of it. Not that it’s that hard to lose in this game. When آپ are doing pretty good, the meter on the side goes into Angel Mode. Angel Mode does…. Something, I’m sure. I think آپ need to be in Angel Mode to win. But fuck up too many times and آپ go into Devil Mode, which… isn’t too hard to get out of. Every time, I managed to get back into Angel Mode. I never fucked up too many times to fall too far away and always made it back before the song ended. Mad Maestro ain’t exactly the hardest of rhythm games out there. Friday Night Funkin’ this is not. But hey, a rhythm game is only as good as its track list. What sort of bangers do we get?
Well, let me just say that this game is composed سے طرف کی three people. Jun Chuma, who… um… worked at Konami at some point. And Mayuko Kageshita, who did موسیقی for the classic game… Sexy Parodius… hmm… But wait! Yuji Takenouchi did the موسیقی for this game as well. This man did موسیقی for Desert’s other game, ChainDive, while also working on other stuff like Ace Combat, The Missing, that game I talked about and enjoyed, and even did sound design for the Dark Souls franchise. This man has got some talent. And with that talent comes some of the hottest tracks this side of Tokyo. Tracks such as… Hungarian Dance No. 6, William Tell Overture, Scene from سوان, ہنس Lake, and more. I mean, this game is about a conductor boy, so I guess this was to be expected. Now, look, I don’t hate classical music. I won’t deny its place in this world, how important it was for us to craft it, and it’s deep roots in موسیقی today, and I can understand the studio not exactly having the best orchestra when they were a small studio, but… Not gonna lie, rhythm games are their best when I can listen to the banger soundtracks in them. And look, I ain’t exactly going to be listening to this in my car. I remember getting to the part where they played Baba Yaga’s Hut and thought, “Oh, that song from Catherine.” It showed just how much of a fucking loser I was, but it also made me realize that they really should have just remixed the scores. And sure, we can say that there was no way they could remix those scores. I’ll take that argument. But that was until I checked out the موسیقی from the other game they worked on, ChainDive. And listened to the first level’s music. And it’s good. It’s really good! Too fucking good for this studio. I’ll put a link to it in the comments, but man, this soundtrack would have definitely popped off مزید if it just had remixed orchestra tracks rather than straight up rips of these classical songs.
But hey, this is just one big nit pik. A NikPik if آپ will. Fucking kill me. I will say that this game, even if it’s gameplay is pretty simple and easy, even on higher difficulties, it does have some charm to it. I like that when آپ mess up in the song سے طرف کی hitting the wrong volume, the band plays that volume at that wrong moment every time. گٹار Hero, when آپ fuck up, just has that twang to it, and PaRappa 2 just makes him go “Oops” when آپ mess up. Nah, آپ fucked up in Mad Maestro. Now آپ get to endure it. I mean, I don’t feel as bad since fuck ups in this game are easy to fix, but still. I like how some of the scenarios get so absurd that I start laughing. Like how there’s this alien attack on like… five people and it’s like a horribly violent attack with explosions. Guess we know where the Mild Violence comes in. And Takt just comes in looking all smug and ready to charm these aliens with his music. And it fucking works. Twice! He charms them again and gets the aliens and the cops dancing to classical music. And those aliens شامل میں your orchestra, and their names are Sho, Ron, and Poe. Get it? Shoronpo? Like the Japanese food. Japanese people love their puns, I swear. And it’s really nice to see this dusty, crusty little apartment آپ occupy get filled with all sorts of townsfolk that want to شامل میں the band. I always like that. Sure, I don’t remember any of these characters' names, aside from Sho, Ron, and Poe, the best characters. But other than that, there’s clown lady, man and his abusive girlfriend, manlet, furry, small child we just abducted, and this hobo who is کہا to be a great musician once and he just smiles and whips out the triangle. I got nothing. That’s just silly to me. That said, this game is oddly sexual at points. Like I don’t mean to be let’s player style humor man with “Wow, isn’t this a kids game”, but with the one girl having tits the size and posture of actual balloons and a رن وے fashion دکھائیں دکھانا off way too much skin. Hell, before the runway, there’s a character smoking on a cigarette. I get this is France and they can’t get enough of their fags (The cigarette, mate), but really? I know the ESRB can’t be fucked to stop kids from gambling, but is this okay in the early 2000s when the D.A.R.E. program was a thing? Oh well, just felt like bringing it up.
Once we get our gaggle of freaks together, we can put on one last show. A straight up three song marathon, which, considering prices for these big theaters, these people got ripped the fuck off. So آپ play three songs to the JPeg audience, and after that, آپ get one last song for an encore. And the game just… stops right in the middle and cuts to credits. Like I thought I fucked up and the game just says, “No, آپ don’t get an encore” and that kind of confused the fuck out of me. But no, that’s apparently supposed to happen. I checked other playthroughs of the game and yeah, they all stop at that exact moment too, so… yeah, I don’t really know what to say. That’s just weird. And with that, آپ actually get this sort of calm, almost melancholy end game. Symphony (That’s the fairy سے طرف کی the way. Her name is Symphony), goes back to the theater hall and returns to a statue. Her job done, she goes back to her sleep, and Takt is back in his apartment سے طرف کی himself, looking over his book with his coffee. Even the Story mode has changed to Memory. It’s kind of a nice touch that I wasn’t expecting from this game… Kind of a shame that I don’t really see myself playing this game again. Yeah, not gonna lie, as much as this game gets right, I was on autopilot for most of it. There was a point where I found myself just zoning out, only vaguely looking at the colors and somehow did just fine. I mean, I still got a C. C’s all across the board, but jeez. Gotta be real, I only played this game on Easy. I did jump into Normal mode a bit after and while it’s not exactly hard, it is faster. But I still did just about as good and got a B. I guess when آپ take the piss baby route, they're gonna give آپ the piss baby treatment. Your best on harder difficulties ain’t shit on easier ones. This is also the kind of game that is easy to beat, but to perfect it, it’s gonna fucking tear آپ asunder. So it’s not like the game isn’t without challenges یا replay value. There is مزید to this game. Just… nothing to keep me around. If this game was مزید funk like, I’d stick around. Also, the story is like one گھنٹہ long. But, PaRappa 2 was also really short, so if I didn’t fault the game for it’s short story, it’s not fair to do it to Mad Maestro, so fuck it.
Mad Maestro is… alright. It’s a unique experience, but whether that unique experience is good یا bad is up for آپ to decide. I will say, it was a nice change of pace to check out something new like this. And I did enjoy looking into the creators and the company behind this game, finding their different works. And it did introduce me to that banging score from ChainDive. And the weird thing about all this is that, while Mad Maestro didn’t do well in America, یا any of the Fresh Games, they all did super well in Japan. In fact, Mad Maestro became one of the سب, سب سے اوپر 200 best selling games of 2001. And while 195th place doesn’t exactly sound great, آپ gotta think about all the games that came out that year. Max Payne, Halo, Pro Skater 3, Smash Melee, Devil May Cry, Silent ہل, لندن 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, Jak and Daxter, Final Fantasy X, Sonic Adventure 2, Baulder’s Gate 2, Twisted Metal Black, Dead یا Alive 3, Onimusha, Ico, Advance Wars, and so on and so on. It wasn’t a bad سال for games. 2001 was a bad سال for a lot of reasons, but not for the games. I’d say Mad Maestro did pretty well in the market. It sold enough to get three sequels, but none of those came out of Japan. So, the Mad Maestro legacy, in America anyway, ends here. I give the game the award of Simple But Clean. It’s nothing amazing. I don’t see myself going for 100%. But it’s harmless fun, a good introduction to rhythm games. It’s not as good as say PaRappa 2 یا Elite Beat Agents. But hey, I’ll take Mad Maestro over Persona 3 and 5 Dancing any دن of the week.
