The room was painted with a mixture of shadows and moon light. The house was silent, minus the sound of the wood creaking. The girl was asleep, a smile painted across her face. She stepped into the light, kneeling beside her.

She reached to take the child, but found someone already had. She heard the swish of a coat.
“And what does Death want with her?”
She stood.
“Terror.”
She faced where he stood in the shadows.
“Give me my child.”
“Lizzie would be safer with a pack of wolves than with you.”
He heard her laugh.
“My child is safest with me.”
“Not while Death controls you.”
She pulled out her gun and pointed it at him.
“Hand. Me. My. Child!”

He knew shadows could not kill, but they could change a child of light drastically. He stood with her in his arms and made his way home. He stepped inside the threshold and placed her on the bed. He closed the door quickly.
“You bring a child.”
He turned to the voice, nodding.
“Yes. The war has begun and she was a pawn.”
