We don't know how much it hurt him until chapter 22 of eclipse, but we catch glimpese of it until then. so no, my opinion of him did not change. And I wouldn't necesarily say that when he left her was a bad decision. He went with the one he thought was right for her. He didn't know how much it would hurt each of them to be apart.
